Queens School Declared Safe After Air Tests

August 24, 2002

By THE NEW YORK TIMES

Schools Chancellor I. Klein has decided to open a

Queens school where teachers and parents have complained

about air quality.

The school, Public School 65 in Ozone Park, is housed in a

former airplane parts factory. In January, the State

Department of Environmental Conservation decided that

contaminated groundwater below a nearby building posed a

health threat. The Board of Education conducted tests last

spring and found that the contamination was too deep

underground to pose a hazard. School officials said the

building was safe.
