" Date: Wed, 08 May 2002 17:15:39 -0700 From: smoochs <smoochs Subject: Silicone injections not " approved " , but " legal " Hi, Silicone injections are not " approved " by the FDA, however ( here is the loophole) a physician has, at his/her discretion, the right to use a product that is FDA approved for another use. Legally the FDA approved pure liquid silicone for injection into the eye as a means of retinal stabilization, to hold the retina in place until it could reattach( around 1994). This is one of the few treatment options people with retinal detachment have, and it does help stabilize their condition and in a significant portion, prevents blindness. The oil is not recommended to stay in the eye permanently though..it is to be removed within a year after surgery. In the US the name of the opthalmic silicone prep is ADATOSIL 5000. Although I am a victim of silicone facial injections and very opposed to them cosmetically, the eye injections seem to offer hope where , without them, there really is none...retinal detachment leads to blindness. Because it is quite legal for a physician, at their discretion, to use a regulated product for an unspecified use( the name for this escapes me), silicone injections are now quite " legal " , even though not " approved " . If you notice in the FDA's response to you she said they were not " approved " , however they are quite " legal " . Swell, huh? ~~~~ From: VANIQUE Date: Wed, 8 May 2002 12:16:52 EDT Subject: Re: From the FDA ... " Silicone injections are not approved by the FDA for anything.
