Guest guest
Darlene, I was diagnosed with a Staph infection in my right breast behind my implant. The infection was in my capsule, which was causing a yellowish fluid buildup, causing my breast to swell to almost a full cup size bigger. I have had my implants for 5 years, and just had this problem all of a sudden. For two weeks, I noticed it not getting any better, so I went to the Dr, that did my implants. He put me on antibiotics for a week, and nothing helped. I had an emergency surgery to explant. I went through explantation with capusules removed as well. This was all on Thursday. I have been home now recoverying for 5 days. They are running some test, and I will have the results back soon. Who knows.. maybe it was due to flaking of the silicone shells. I had saline implants, with textured shells. Mentors. I will keep in touch, in hopes with some news on my condition. Layne
Guest guest
If it is a skin bacteria, it's likely to be Staph Epidermis, a superantigen. Good thing you got those out. That is what has been found with a lot of BI women--it can really stir up the immune system when it gets going. Some speculate that it got inside the body from the surgery itself--who knows-- sounds feasible. Doesn't sound like you had much and with the med it will be fine. Just because there is 'a bacteria doesn't mean there is an infection. Might want to take some probiotics either with or right after the penicillin. You can get them at the healthfood store in the refrigerated section--they will put the good bacteria in the body that the penicillin kills. Don't know if that's what's causing problems--but you'll know in a few days. Best wishes, Bonnie
Guest guest
DARLENE! I am sooo glad they found that out. I have NO idea about such things but now I know why Dr. Kolb asked what my capsular culture results were.....unfortunately I don't think my surgeon took any, but the fluid was tested and negative to bacteria (although my pathology bill had two different item numbers listed on it, so who know's). Anyway maybe you should e-mail Dr. Kolb in case she dosen't have time to pop in, you might get a faster reply. You are taking the prescribed medicine aren't you? I hope so!!!! Get well soon, Love Keli. > I think someone mentioned having this once, but I can't remember who. > They found a positive culture for Staphylococcus species - rare > growth im my capsuel. > > The test showed that penicillin was one that it responded to. Guest guest
Wow Layne! So happy you got them removed when you did. It will be interesting to know more about your results when they come. It definately is not the same fluid I had, mine was clear. Were you ill with them though? If not, you were extremely lucky. Do you think the saline was contaminated and somehow leaking through the shell or valve? Also did you send them for testing? It's probably a great idea, CJ has the info on who to send them to if you decide to do that and get an accurate result of what was in the saline. I'm starting to wonder if textured saline implants are causing more problems than the smooth saline ones.....What are everyone else's thoughts on this? I know they are all damaging in their own ways though. Guest guest
Most patients have a combination of bacterial and yeast problems and both should be treated. Usually certain antibiotics are more effective than others for silicone toxic patients. I think someone mentioned having this once, but I can't remember who. They found a positive culture for Staphylococcus species - rare growth im my capsuel. The test showed that penicillin was one that it responded to. So my PS gave me a RX, but he wasn't sure if that was why I was flu like and achy, as this can grow on skin and other surfaces. I'm not sure if this is why I have been sick, or if it is the silicone flaking off. If anyone has ever delt with this please let me know if you know anything about it. Thanks. Guest guest
I think that this is very very common problem in implants, I had bacteria in mine too. Although I didn't take anything for it, and eventually got better with natural means. I think that antibiotics are probably called for, but think that when it comes to the strange symptoms from implants that we all had, it has more to do with the foreign body than with infection, although I could be wrong. Keep us posted. Hugs PS there are some natural antibiotics too that you could give a shot, oregano oil is a good one and raw garlic too. ----- Original Message ----- From: " cdpayne64 " <cdpayne64@...> < > Sent: Tuesday, June 25, 2002 6:00 PM Subject: Anyone hear of staph in capsule? > I think someone mentioned having this once, but I can't remember who. > They found a positive culture for Staphylococcus species - rare > growth im my capsuel. > > The test showed that penicillin was one that it responded to.
