Patty, When I was at the health food store today (on Broadway & Craycroft), they gave me a free health magazine and one of the articles in there deals with losing weight with supplements. In this article, it talks about collagen protein and the benefits of it. According to this article, it is newly available, and fast becoming one of the "hottest" nutritional supplements available. Apparently, it was created in the '70's by a pharmacist, and has been used in weight loss clinics; to improve skin appearance, for burn victims, nutritional support for the elderly and hospital pts, wound healing, and for the support of joints and connective tissue. This article states: "Supplementing with collagen protein is believed to provide the body with the amino acids necessary to manufacture and support collagen. Much different from other protein sources, collagen protein contains a unique combination and ratio of high nitrogen amino acids, most importantly, glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine." It then goes on to say: "Collagen itself does not burn fat; however, it places the body's metabolism in an optimal state to do so. When taken at bedtime, it is extremely effective during the first phase of sleep in which the body is in a natural state of repair, building and healing muscle tissue. Collagen's specific amino acids help to preserve and build lean muscle. Since muscle helps to regulate and increase the metabolism, fat can then be burned as energy to help support this bodily repair process. When used as part of a total weight management program that includes healthy eating and exercise, collagen protein can be a very effective tool in the fat loss and body toning process." There is also another article called "Scaling Down: lose that pear shape with these safe supplements" It is written by Amber Ackerson, ND. Some of the best supplements in helping you to lose weight are: CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) 500mg 3x/day before or with meals. It reduces fat in overweight and moderately obese people. It is also reported to increase lean body mass, muscle strength and exercise endurance (Journal of Obesity And Related Metabolic Disorders 2001, and Journal of Nutrition 2000. Pyruvate--promotes weight loss by enhancing metabolic rate. Human studies reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1992, 1994) have found that pyruvate not only promotes the loss of body fat, but, as reported in Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders, 1996, it also helps to keep it off.
