World's Largest Breast Implant Manufacturing Facility Opens in Leiden, Netherlands -- Mentor Corp. Launches "Giant Breast Plant" -- Responsible for Producing 150,000 Impplants Per Year

Story Filed: Wednesday, September 04, 2002 6:25 AM EST

LEIDEN, Netherlands, Sept 4, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- On September 6, 2002, Mentor Corp., the world's leading manufacturer of breast impllants, makes official the opening of its new plant facility in Leiden, The Netherlands -- the biggest of its kind in the world.

Sitting on nearly 6,000 square meters, the new plant is four times the size of its predecessor and was built to help Mentor meet the growing demands of women and their surgeons (in Europe and around the world) seeking implants for augmentation or reconstruction. Currently that demand requires that the new plant produce more than 150,000 Mentor breast implants, distributed to 60 different nations, per year.

The state-of-the-art facility, which employs 100 workers, features many automation, cleaning, utility and process engineering advances new to the industry.

Adri Hoogwerf, Mentor's Managing Director for the Leiden Operation, reports that among the 150,000 implants manufactured at the plant will be the company's latest offerings to the European market, including the popular Contour Profile® Gel, the new Cohesive Gel implant, the High Profile Gel and the Classic and Becker 50 implants (which enable patient-friendly single-stage procedures without Expanders). In addition, the plant will manufacture Mentor's line of gel testicular implants for men.

"Obviously at Mentor, we believe bigger can be better," said Hoogwerf. "We're very proud of the new facility and the fact that it will enable us to better meet the ever-growing needs of this unique market here and abroad."

Mentor conducts research & development and manufacturing at a number of facilities in Europe and the United States, and has sales distribution throughout the world. The Company has about 2,000 employees and has operated continuously since 1969. In 1995, Mentor became the first breast implant manufacturer to achieve CE-marking for its products.
