Hey all how is everyone? I am ok, but I keep catching the latest round of sniffles and sore throat at work. I am looking for different ideas and tips about how to avoid catching the latest crud that seems to keep circulating at work. I believe that the air ventilation at the hospital I work in is shitty, I also believe that the place is not clean at all, combine this with the fact that it is a small nurses station with a revolving shift of about 12 to 13 people per shift, 3x a day, not counting Dr's. then the fact that this is a surgical orthopedic floor connected to a pediatric ward we have tons of people in and out 24 hours a day, touching things, phones, charts, med sheets, everything is community property, shared, nothing is yours in this environment, even your pen and pencil ! ARG it is so frustrating. Everyday I go to work someone is sniffling and coughing, it is unreal. I take my vitamin c, my oregano oil, I eat well, I am in good shape, but when the germs are right in your air space all the time what do you do to avoid it? I clean my phone constantly, but it is no use, as soon as I move someone grabs it and calls a Dr or some one gets a call, there is not enough phone or work space ! I love my job but man it can be a source of frustration. Also what roll does weather play in colds and flues or is it all a myth? Right now the weather fluctuates from 25 degrees in the am to 65 degrees in the afternoon, so it is a huge swing, you leave the house in the am and you need a parka, in the afternoon you need a tank top! Anyhow right now I keep getting the damn gunk in my sinuses and the headache and sniffles, and then right when I think it is gone, it comes back again, I suspect that we keep passing it around, since it is obvious that everyone there has it. Also I am wondering if this is going to be a really bad year for RSV? I worked in the pediatric unit to help them out last night as it was sooo busy and they were already getting little ones with RSV? Last year it was bad too. In Ca I didn't see so much of this stuff, so I wonder if it is the weather, the cold or what? It is allot different living in this area. Of course in CA I worked at a big hospital with allot better air venting and it was an ICU so the desk are was allot less populated then this type of unit. e you work in a hospital (though usually in a pacu environment) what about you? Do you see allot of colds and stuff around there? What about you Dr Kolb? I realize the environment that I am working in is a bit different though, surgical and pacu units are usually cleaner than the post op floors.

Anyhow once again I am here with the sniffles wondering what I can do to get off the merry-go-round.

thanks

, At any hospital you are going to be exposed more frequently to viruses and bacteria regardless of the area you work in or the hospital. Hospitals are dirty, and doctors and nurses don't even come close to washing their hands as much as they should, so of course you will be exposed to much more. Plus, ventilation in hospitals sucks, and all you do is breathe germs all day. The ICU, PACU, and ER are some of the worst places to pick up germs because they are critical care environments and these areas are where the majority of the germs are. And studies have shown that in these areas, where docs and nurses should be washing their hands in between every pt just for the fact alone that it is a critical care area; critical care areas are the areas that have the least amount of compliance with handwashing and good hygiene. As for the temp swings, I do believe that it can play a role in you getting sick. You wake up to a cold AM, go to work where germs are all over, and then leave work and it's warm. Your body isn't having a chance to adjust or defend itself against the onslaught of temp extremes and germs. Plus, if you already have a weakened immune system, you're a prime candidate for getting ill, whether it be a cold, flu, or something more serious. e ----- Original Message ----- From: Heer Sent: Thursday, October 17, 2002 8:42 AM Subject: Question/advice Hey all how is everyone? , Also, the PACU is basically an ICU. It is one of the most dirtiest units in the hospital. It is so easy to forget to wash your hands in between pts because you only have 2 pts MAX, and they're so gorked out on anesthesia, that you just don't think about it. And the pts are always right next to one another, so you go back and forth pushing drugs, watching the monitors, doing your assessment, and you just don't even think about it. Then you transfer your pt out of the PACU to wherever they're going, and you get another one, and the process starts all over again. I have been in some very dirty PACU's, and it's disgusting. But it doesn't suprise me since PACU is an ICU/critical care area, and critical care areas are usually the dirtiest of all units in the hospital. e ----- Original Message ----- From: Heer Sent: Thursday, October 17, 2002 8:42 AM Subject: Question/advice Hey all how is everyone? My response: Ok. I know I have had a long day. Read that as "bikini gloves" and was wondering what the heck that was! Dacia<><Deaf Lutheran Missionssouth Wisconsinwww.DeafJesus.org For it is by grace you have been

Some more ideas for treating you on your birthday:How about something that will encourage & support your journey to a healthier lifestyle? How about getting a pedometer to record how many steps you take a day? Some new workout clothes? A new cookbook with healthier recipes? A magazine subscription to something like Fitness, Prevention, Diabetic Living (I love this one!)?
