The bug - harmless to humans - is used to provoke our immune system to tackle tumours. Tests in Leeds showed low doses of the flu-like virus had a huge impact on cancer cells. It is now planned to assess the treatment against cancers including skin, bowel, head and neck. Brad Thomson, of Canadian firm Oncolytics, said: " Initial trials showed 70, 75, 80 per cent tumour regression in some cases. That's pretty exciting. " Dr Alan Melcher, of St 's Hospital in Leeds which is collaborating with clinics across the country, said: " The virus might wake up the immune system and attack the cancer cells which it would otherwise ignore.
