The primarymaterial usually viewed as the base material in the manufacture of implants is polydimethylsiloxane. Polymericreactions are notorious for their variability and nonuniformity. The elastomer used in different types of implants canhave vastly different properties. Furthermore, the materialproperties associated with a particular type if implant canvary considerably from one lot to the next. The two typesof implants chosen for analysis were Silastic I and SilasticII (Dow) control implants. Material property data were determinedfor both types of controls and significant differences werefound in their values. Lot-to-lot variability was also investigatedand found to be significant."Considering what is put into silicone gel implants--this seemspretty significant to me. . .has this man's need to be in thelimelight supersceded his memory and common sense? Orare some plastic surgeons so confident of their postion that theyfeel it doesn't matter what they publicize? Or, in fact,is Leroy Young objective re silicone implants? Actually, some of his other published research makes is appear thathe could be. And it could be that we've been shelved whilemedical science studies this issue they have been sort ofignored. . Breast implants are not the only implants thatcause problems--gel is not the only type of silicone thatcauses problems, either.Common sense says this variability would dictate thatvarious amounts of catalyst (chloroplatinic acid) were used. For anyone that is still suffering effects it seems a checkon platinum in the body is warranted.Bonnie
