Guest guest
http://www.thescotsman.co.uk/international.cfm?id=1114042002 Jealous rival in plastic surgery face-off with Pfeiffer Mark In New York THE film star Pfeiffer was at the centre of an embarrassing debate yesterday over whether or not she has undergone plastic surgery. Hollywood’s rumour mill was grinding after a bitter attack on Pfeiffer by the actress Heaton. In an interview, Heaton, who stars in the television comedy Everybody Loves , called Pfeiffer, 44, a hypocritical drama queen who has sought cosmetic surgery to retain her youthful looks. She told the talk show host Letterman: "A cover of a big fashion magazine just came out this month and a very famous actress is on the front. "I open up and see inside ... she’s saying in it, ‘Oh, you know Botox and plastic surgery scare me’, and I thought, oh, that’s interesting because I just interviewed the [plastic surgeon] that did you." Pfeiffer is on the cover of the current issue of Harper’s Bazaar. Inside she says: "Plastic surgery really scares me. Even Botox scares me." The Botox treatment involves injections of the botulinum toxin to paralyse facial muscles, which smooths out wrinkles. These and other comments were immediately pounced upon by US tabloid writers. "Saving face? Pfeiffer says ‘no thanks’," read a headline in the New York Daily News. An accompanying article excitably brayed, in the nonsense-speak typical of tabloids worldwide, that Heaton, 44, had prompted a "celebrity plastic-surgery smackdown". The gossip writer Jeanette Walls, of MSNBC, also joined in. "Is Pfeiffer two-faced?" she mused, using a stunningly original pun, in an editorial. Heaton meanwhile discussed her own plastic surgery, telling Letterman she believed it unfair for celebrities "to pretend they look so fabulous merely by eating well and doing sit-ups". Approached on the subject yesterday Pfeiffer attempted to make light of the war of words. "I guess as long as people keep saying I have had plastic surgery, I can continue to put it off for a few more years," she said. The comments are bound to reopen the have-they haven’t-they debate about screen stars. Last winter, Redford, 65, made a blistering attack on what he described as a "sick obsession with plastic surgery" branding those who underwent it for cosmetic reasons as "vain and insecure". A few months later, however, he appeared to undergo a change of heart, sporting a distinctly youthful face at the Academy Awards. The actress Lee Curtis last month admitted that she had had plastic surgery, liposuction, and Botox injections, but they made her look worse. One stars who has made no secret of it is the singer Cher. "Everybody over 50 needs a little help. It’s worth every penny," the 55-year-old said. Wayne was one of the first major screen stars to book in for a facelift. Burt Reynolds and both Kirk and have also had cosmetic surgery.
