Actually the October full moon has been called the Blood Moon for centuries. This is the last of the three harvest moons. Centuries ago this was the time of year when the cattle were killed and hunting was done and the meat preserved for the coming winter months. The meat was salted, dried, smoked ect. Blood Moon because the animals were hunted and/or slaughtered and the meat preserved to help sustain life during the cold winter months of the year. I guess it could be kind of creepy, especially if you were the one who had to do the slaughtering. Yuck!

AND NOW FOR TODAY'S SITE... Blood moon risingWhat could be a creepier nickname for a full moon than Blood Moonor Hunter's Moon? It certainly conjures up scary images. I guessit's appropriate that we're having one tonight since we're so closeto Halloween.A Blood Moon occurs when there's a lunar eclipse. The sun casts itsshadow in such a way that the entire moon turns from white to orangeand then to blood red!NASA has a great explanation of why this occurs. There's a link to astreaming audio narration. The narrator has a nice reading voice anddoes a good job of making a technical subject come to life!TO VISIT THIS SITE, GO HERE:http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2004/13oct_lunareclipse.htmDon't forget that you can listen to me Monday through Fridayon hundreds of radio stations.
