It's very contageous, so if he scratches, it spreads. You can treat it with zinc oil, to dry the patches. Try to keep him from touching it. Ofcourse it could be something else, though. But trying the zinc oil won't hurt, I guess. It doesn't look very flattering.
Guest guest
Hi Donna, Have you tried Abreva on the cold sore? It's available over the counter at your pharmacy and has actually been approved by the FDA for shortening the healing time of cold sores. My dad swears by it--he gets cold sores a lot. Guest guest
There is now a prescription drug you rub on it when a cold sore appears. You can get it through any doctor or dentist. I can't remember the name off hand but I think it started with a Z. Carla Cold sores Hi everyone, Lately, my little guy has been getting a recurrent cold sore, about dime-size, on the right-hand corner of his mouth. He got his first one about 6-7 weeks ago after having Fifth Disease, then about 4 weeks ago he caught a cold and developed another one. Today, he has another one starting. The sore lasts about a week. It fades, but never completely, then flares up again. He has not had another cold lately and doesn't seem ill (although behaviorally, he does seem a little " off " ). I told Dr. G about the sores at our last visit and he increased 's Famvir a bit. That was eight days ago. I've sent an update to Dr. G's office, but as they'll undoubtedly be closed on Monday, they won't get the message until Tuesday, which means the earliest we can expect a response will be Wednesday...so I thought I'd get some opinions from the group. Does anyone have an educated guess about what might be happening here? was on Valtrex the first six months of the protocol, then was switched to Famvir. That was 18 months ago. Could it be time to switch antivirals again? Or could this be a die-off from the increase? What other antivirals does Dr. G use besides Valtrex and Famvir? Also, can anyone recommend something to put on the sore to relieve the discomfort and possibly help it heal faster? Actually, I did buy some Abreva this morning and applied it several times today. The sore actually looks less bad than it did this morning! I keep thinking it's my imagination, but we'll see tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who responded...we'll also have to watch the chocolate intake and limit the amount of time he spends in the sun (swimming). I usually only give my son small amounts of sugar-free, milk-free chocolate (Pure De-Lite Dark Chocolate), but now I recall that I gave a bar to his behavior therapist when she took him to see the movie " Two Brothers " a couple of days ago, and told her to give him small pieces. Well, to my horror, she gave him the entire bar -- in small pieces. Yikes! :-) Thanks again, Donna
