LOS ANGELES, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- ``The myth that swallowing fluoridated

water reduces tooth decay has now been totally discredited,'' said Dr.

Yiamouyiannis, internationally noted expert on Fluoridation and President

of the Safe Water Foundation, who will appear today at the Greater Los

Angeles Press Club at 2:00 p.m. (PDT) at 6255 W. Sunset Blvd., Suite 2000

(20th Floor), Hollywood, CA 90028 (Phone: 323 469-8180).

``The fact that Los Angeles plans to start fluoridation on May 24th, less

than a month after Dr. Hardy Limeback, fluoride expert for the Canadian

Dental Association, has revealed that studies show not only that swallowing

fluoridated water does not reduce tooth decay but, in fact causes a disease

called dental fluorosis in 60% of his patients (Toronto Star, 4/25/99), is

ill-informed, arbitrary and capricious,'' said Dr. Yiamouyiannis, who will

appear in Canada next week to make presentations before the Ontario

Environments Ministry and two of the largest water authorities in Ontario

and Toronto Water Authority.

Attorney Daley, who represents the L.A. Citizens for Safe Drinking

Water, is filing a motion today for a temporary restraining order to stop

the May 24th fluoridation action authorized by the L.A. City Council,

citing that in addition to it's being ineffective, fluoridation has been

scientifically linked to serious and even fatal health problems including

bone disorders, genetic damage and cancer.

According to Bill Hirzy, vice president of the Union of Professional

Workers and Scientists of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in

Washington D.C., these effects have been recently validated unanimously.

``These are the scientists

responsible for setting the safety standards for drinking water in the

U.S.,'' Dr. Yiamouyiannis stated.

Dr. Yiamouyiannis revealed that ``the most recent scientific data published

indicates that tooth decay and dental costs in California have been

identical in areas that are not fluoridated when compared to areas that

have been fluoridated for up to 47 years.''

``In addition to Dr. Hardy Limeback's admission that fluoride does not

reduce tooth decay,'' Dr. Yiamouyiannis stated ``that similar admissions

have been made to (him) privately by Dr. Volpe, the worldwide

Dental Director for

Colgate-Palmolive and Dr. of the National Institute for Dental

Research, which is a division of the U.S. Public Health Service.

Dr. Yiamouyiannis concluded by saying, ``It's interesting that leading

experts on both sides of the issue have agreed that swallowing fluoridated

water does absolutely nothing to reduce tooth decay.''
