We are glad you are here and hope that you will enjoy it here. There is a lot of info in the files and message archives, so feel free to do some reading, copying, printing etc. As for the coughs your two boys are experiencing, can you give us some specifics? How long have they had this cough? Are they both suffering the same cough? As in dry cough or is it moist with lots of mucus? Hacking cough, persisitent cough? Does it sound like they are trying to expel anything from their throats? Do you live in the north country where it gets cold? Wet moist climate, what? What type of heating do you have? Wood stove? Gas? Electric? I am not so sure about using a nebulizer on an infant his age. Depending on the type of cough he has it might be more prudent to go another route. Humidifier. Just some questions to get you going. Guest guest
Hi , What kind of meds do they want to use in the nebulizer? And for how long? Are they just trying to break up a nasty chest cold? Have they tried anything else? We have used nebs here quite a bit, but my daughter has some major league airway issues, so we often don’t have a choice. Often times though I can cut down on the meds needed using good old Vicks.. it is aroma therapy after all <g> LOTS of humidity!!! Cupping your hands and ‘pounding’ on the chest, both front and back. Works better if baby can tolerate laying head down on your legs while you do it. Some kids can’t do that cause they will spit up and be very uncomfy and add to your problems. Also if your insurance will pay, a nebulizer is a very handy item to have around. J You can use plain saline in it and get some very concentrated humidity into kids. I prop mine using a full roll of toilet paper and the blow by tubing aimed at her face while she sleeping. Have also used the mask with saline to really break stuff up. Be prepared as sometimes they will really cough a lot with this. Sometimes a good coughing spell is all it took for her to get over the hump. Be very careful what you use in the neb though. I wouldn’t be putting any EO in that, save that for your room humidifier. Anything you put in the neb should be sterile and as free from minerals and ‘stuff’ as possible cause it ALL goes into the lungs at a concentrated rate. This cough remedy was posted on another list and it was for kids. Don’t know how much you would have to get into a baby of even if this is ok for a baby.. the people here will know! I am new as well and going to be trying new natural remedies to keep my daughter off the nebs as much as possible too. ake a hot infusion of equal parts of Osha (Ligusticum porteri), Mullein (Verbascum thapsus), Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis), Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), and give your child one dose of tea, twice daily, for as long as the cough is present. Osha helps to clear the lungs, mullein helps promote expectoration and soothes the respiratory tract, Marshmallow root lessens inflammation and coats and soothes an irritated throat, and licorice has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties and makes the tea more palatable. My kids both have a cough that we can't shake off. What can I give to them that is safe and will clear it up?? The Dr. wants Ian to use a nebulizer what do you all think of that??
