This is a bit long but please read!

Hello to you all! The holidays are over and now we have some great

news! We are expecting our third baby. IT is very new. I haven't

seen the OB yet. I would like some help. Here is some history: We

lost our first child in 12/97 on his due date. I had a condition

known to affect Chilean and Scandinavian women (of which I am the

later). It is not very prevalent in the U.S. The specialist I saw

in NJ had only seen 2 cases and none as bad as mine. I also had it

with my 2 subsequent pregnancies (the itching was not as bad but my

liver levels were just as high). IT is characterized by itching

that I describe as having poison ivy and chicken pox and then get a

mosquito bite that you cannot itch. It is intense!!! It affects

the entire body, especially the palms of my hands and soles of my

feet. I also cannot wear anything with tags and clothes must have

felled seams. I do not turn jaundice until I deliver. Then I am as

yellow as a tennis ball and my urine is bilious for about 2 days.

Then I am back to normal. I sat in the bath tub for about 18 hours

out of a day during the first pregnancy for about the last 5

months.

Basically, I need to know what herbs to avoid during pregnancy and

what herbs I can use to support my liver without adversly affecting

the pregnancy. If there is such an herb that will reduce bile acids

in the bloodstream. (the culpret) With the last two pregnancies

(both girls) they were taken by CSection at 36 weeks(as soon as the

lungs were mature). All I have researched says that if you do not

take the baby by 36-38 weeks there can be fetal distress and demise

(which is what happened with our son; my amniotic fluid was like pea

soup when I delivered him). (I also don't know if the condition was

worse because he was a boy and my other 2 are girls; the different

hormones?)

I am sorry this is so long but I am really looking for some help

before I get too far along and go to the OB.

Thanks in advance!

Fern

Hi Fern,

First, congratulations on the new upcoming addition to your family.

Second, dandelion root, yellow dock root and milk thistle are all fine

for use with pregnancy and are good for the liver and gall bladder. You

might also consider: Black radish juice and some other kinds of

radishes are excellent for jaundice. Make fresh black radish juice, with

the black skin on, and drink 1 tbsp. diluted in water three times

daily. Stimulate the gall-bladder and liver with a dandelion,

silverweed and black radish juice therapy. Drink 1 tbsp. of dandelion

juice mornings and evenings for a week, then silverweed for a week and

the third week black radish juice. As a prevention, for adults and

expectant mothers, cleanse with dandelion leaf salad and tea of the

roots. Be sure to include 2 tbsp. of milk thistle

<http://www.herbs2000.com/herbs/herbs_thistle_milk.htm> and artichoke

juice to strengthen liver tissue. Beet leaves and roots rejuvenate and

rebuild the liver. Add 1 cup of boiling water to 1 tsp. of leaves and

roots, steep and drink twice daily.

A stay away from if you are pregnant or nursing herb list will be forth

coming within the next few days. I doubt it will be all inclusive but

will give you a good idea of what you can and all of them you can't use.

Kind of sounds like your bile duct just shuts down and reroutes

everything into the blood. Interesting. I have never heard of this before.

Peace be with you Fern.

Thanks Don!

I did some research last night also and found some of the

suggestions that you mentioned. Apparently the condition is very

common in Europe, not here. It is misdiagnosed here as allergy;

mine was for my first pregnancy. It doesn't usually start until the

5th or 6th month for me. I will keep you posted with treatments I

use and their results.

Thanks again and Happy New Year!

Oh, and as an aside..........

I consider myself completely healed!!! My body just hasn't caught up yet. But it will!!
