5HTP

Dear Carole,

My adult daughter (asperger's) takes it. It works the best, better than

St.'s. I would guess the problems come from the SSRI (selective serotonin

reuptake inhibitors -- took me a long time to memorize that one!) drugs, not

the natural stuff, except maybe kava kava.

They even make it in 100 mgs. so 50 -- which is what my daughter takes --

isn't that much.

Everything I read about it sounded good. Also, have you thought of GABA?

I'm so glad you're feeling better.

I recently tried 5-htp, and had a significant

improvement in mood... made me realize how depressed I

was. Seemed too good to be true, so I asked the 'ol

internet to find the catch....

The only thing I found was one doc warning that 5-htp

could be converted to serotonin by the liver, thus

elevating blood serotonin, which could ultimately have

adverse affects on heart valves through 'proliferation

of myocytes'. He speculated even 50mg of 5-htp might

increase blood serotonin enough to be of concern.

Taking vitamin B6 with the 5-htp is supposed to

increase the conversion to serotonin in the liver.

(The doc is Steve , a Life Extension doc.)

Has anyone looked into this more? I hear it's used a

lot in Europe, maybe someone there has some info on

it?

I'm still going to use it for awhile, it seems like

there'd be more info on this if it were a problem.
