Here is the information I have gathered so far. We have been putting

off braces for a few years now because of this issue. My dd needs them

badly. She has a very pronounced overbite.

Personally, I developed a lifelong nickel allergy from my braces.

Nickel does leach from them according to Huggins. He also notes that

braces are often the reason a bright, happy preteen becomes morbidly

depressed and their grades drop. (I agree with that. Seen it happen to

myself and my sister)

Andy has suggested going with 200 series stainless because it does not

contain nickel. It is cobalt and iron if I remember right. He has said

in the past that any metals from the braces would be minimal and

chelation should not be an problem.

However, I am with you on " not wanting to put metals in her mouth " .

They want my daughter to wear a Herbst appliance for 8 months. This is

a very metal-ly, bonded in appliance to correct overbites. After which

she would have braces. Now the braces that she would get had very

little metal on them at all. They are called Damon 3 system. There are

no metal tooth bands, just tiny plastic brackets with a small metal

clip on them, that are bonded onto the tooth. Now these did not scare

me much, they don't have a lot of metal to them. Not like traditional

braces. But the Herbst...unless they can make it out of nickel free

stainless...I worry. She would also have to wear retainers after, but

those had no metal at all. They were clear plastic like Invisalign.

I planned to stop chelation during this, due to the risk of pulling

small amounts of nickel. We had a mom on here a long while back whose

child was dumping large amounts of nickel. Come to find out he had

like 4 stainless caps on his molars. She had the caps removed.

So some say it's ok to chelate with this stuff. Some say it's not.

I would think the metal burden would be minimal in comparison to what

we are already dealing with in regards to the mercury.

I would be inclined to do a hair test on my dd while she was wearing

those to see if her nickel went up. I still have to call them back and

ask if the Herbst can be made using nickel free metals.

But...all that metal is conductive..which is another problem. Often

the galvanization creates it's own problems. (Hal Huggins reports that

currents are in any metal in the mouth, and often these currents are

higher than brain electrical currents, so it disrupts the brain currents)

I was considering chelating with ala only while she wore braces,

because it has a low affinity for other metals. But I have not decided

either way what I am going to do yet.

I would ask to see the MSDS data sheets for any material they plan to

use. This will tell you the metal compositions, and you can ask for

nickel free products. IDK about the tungsten being a problem.

> What about stainless steel, nickel, tungsten, etc. in dental braces?

I am loathe to add metals into my childrens' mouths; will the metals

be adding a new problem while I'm working at chelating out

mercury...the retainer is something that should be worn at night till

they're grown, will they have a new body burden of metals to contend

with due to orthodontics? Helen

I wanted to add some more information to this:

I have been doing tons of research trying to find an alternative to

what they want to do to my kid. They want to surgically remove all her

wisdom teeth, use a Herbst appliance to faciltate jaw growth, then braces.

I prefer any way around all that metal. Something more natural. I keep

thinking there has to be a better way.

I have foudn two possibilities thus far. One is called a MyoMunchie

developed by an Australian dentist. I contacted him and he told me

what I should use for my child and that he thought it could correct

the lower jaw by faciliating growth, and that is what they use in

Australia over braces. Read the site. It is useful for children under

10 generally, beginning as early as 3 I believe.

http://www.teethperfect.com/contact.htm

The other options is something called BioBloc which are retainer

appliances that facilitate jaw growth and allow teeth to move into

normal positions and allow for normal face growth.

As I had read, normal orthodontics often come at a cost to face

development later on. resulting in longer faces, flatter faces, etc.

Anyway this site has information about correcting teeth naturally

using Biobloc. It also has a list to find providers. There seem to be

some in every state from what I can see.

http://www.orthotropics.com/patients_parents/extracton_non.html

Can't say this will be the answer for anyone, but I am going to look

into it. I think if I had known about this when she was smaller, it

could have been corrected using the Myomunchi. She had an overbite at

a 3 year old. However, not giving up hope..he said she's still young

enough.

Anyway...just some fyi for those looking at orthodontics. There are

options, they are just not widely talked about.

About a year ago the dentist was expecting ours to need this jaw facilitating

treatment. The description of the process sounds truly horrible and ours has NO

tolerance for pain, at all, neither me, hers or mine. It was enough to scare my

dd into stop slathering suncreen on the little one and 6 months of nice

sunshine, 4 tsps of high vitamin clo, D and K and the dentist said he was

pleased with her progress and she would not need the jaw growth facilitating

treatment. Get them out in the sun!

The younger they are the easier this is to correct.

I didn't catch the age - did you say 10? If so, it may take a bit more, but it

will certainly help.

I suggest reading Weston Price's " Nutrition and Physical Degeneration " to

understand the root of the problem. (It is full of illustrative pictures, so

you get the idea pretty quick.) It is online here:

http://journeytoforever.org/farm_library.html#price

http://journeytoforever.org/farm_library/price/pricetoc.html

It is also available for sale at http://www.price-pottenger.org

To see a case of treatment of a child, see " Pottenger's Cats: A Study in

Nutrition " , which you can also obtain from the Price Pottenger Foundation. You

will see a picture of a treated girl on p.80. I think that chapter 12 is on the

subject. (It's a small book. You will get the idea quickly.)

Thanks for all this discussion, it's really useful. I just had a thought about

ortho treatment though. In my kids' cases, an appliance would be worn for about

a year to widen the dental arches. The appliances are made out of plastic, but

I don't know really what composes the plasticyet, I will ask for the material

data sheets. Maybe their treatment could end after this point? The arches

would be roomier to accomodate the crowding of teeth, and they would avoid 2

years of stainless steel, nickle, titanium etc. in their mouths and a lifetime

of wearing a retainer...I will propose this to the dentist, perhaps it's

simplistic...any comments? Helen

Helen,

Please don't be fooled (as I was) into thinking that plastic in your

mouth is safe. It isn't. I wore a plastic dental appliance and then

Invisalign braces and was debilitatingly ill for months before

putting two and two together. Many of these plastics are toxic,

especially to sensitive people like myself and our kids. Wearing

these appliances completely debilitated me, overwhelmed my immune

system, and basically caused me to lose about a year of my life. My

body has still not recovered.

Hi Jada,

I have emailed you privately with my story of orthodontic treatment

for my child. NO CHEWING permitted on this one, it just sits in

the mouth when sleeping. Takes a while to convince your child to

keep it there!!! I used to go and check her an hour after bedtime to

ensure it was in.

For others out there interested, my child did very well using this

appliance - apparently made from a safe (?) silicon. The type got

changed as her jaw growth improved/shape of upper mouth changed too.

The improvements were immeasurable and in my opinion worth it(no

extractions needed). We had to have her adenoids removed prior to

being able to use it successfully (eliminating mouthbreathing issue).

http://www.myoresearch.com/cms/index.php?myobrace

She did however have braces on from age 10-11 or so, AND she did

get a multitude of severe viral infections and very severe chicken

pox during this period. Then at age 12 she crashed from the Hep B

shot.....am now very suspicious of the impact of the metallic braces

leaking ????

Still using silicone brace (nightly) and health continuing to improve

with some biomed supports.

-na,

Metal spacer bar and metal braces here also. When my daughter was 16,

I found biomed info. Both nickel and chromium were very high!! When

the orthodontist checked the stainless steel wire[the only exposure I

could think of] had over 9% nickel and close to 20% chromium. Both

she and her younger brother had metal retainers by then. Both had

them removed. Her levels fell substantially. I don't view this as a

coincidence.
