Hi Carol, sorry it took so long for this reply. I have been reading up on LS. Taking into account her excellent diet and nutrition, I have come up with a few ideas you might add to her routine. Aloe vera juice - get a good organic aloe juice and add some to her favorite juice everyday. Astragalus - can't say enough bout this wonderful herb. It adapts to the body's needs and can be taken long term safely. My kids simply do not get sick when they have this on a regular basis. For , it may help normalize her immune response. Rosemary - both externally and internally a must have for any skin condition. It is fully of antioxidants too. Calendula - very gentle addition to any salve or cream. Has soothing and healing properties for skin conditions and scar tissue. Wild yam - this would be the natural alternative to the hormone cream. If you make, or have the compounding pharmacy make a salve, it should be in a bees wax base. Rosemary, calendula, vitamin E, vitamin A and vitamin C would be a good mix. Personally, I would lay off any hormonal additions (thus no wild yam). I sure hope this helps you hon.

*big hugs to *

Subject: Zinc,Mag and Hormones?

You guys are all so smart, thought I would run this by you all and see if had any insights.

has a condition called lichen sclerosis which they think is an auto-immune disorder. It’s on her genitals and studies have shown people with LS have faulty receptor cells for hormones, esp estrogen and testosterone. *The* treatment standard in the past was topical testosterone, and yes, even for children. Now the standards is a level one cortisone cream, the highest level you can get, that also carries with it all the nasty side effects of steroid therapy.

Anyway…. So make a very long story short. I managed to get a compounded hormone cream of bio-identical estridiol, testosterone and a little progesterone that is supposed to keep it ON her skin so there would be very little absorption. We have been using it since March with NO side effects and her ped and endo have both been really looking for them, as have I.

A few weeks ago I started to supplement her zinc and mag as I had to stop her regular multi vitamin.. another long story. Lo and behold the child suddenly starts sprouting a couple of black pubic hairs all of a sudden! The logical thing to suspect would be the hormones creams, but again, why NOW ? The only thing I have changed was adding the zinc and mag. I know zinc can affect thyroid function and if you are deficient it delays puberty as well so that is my first guess here. People with DS sometimes have precocious puberty, but it’s typically secondary to un-dxed hypothyroidism. Her thyroid numbers have IMPROVED and she takes a tiny amount of synthroid which we could stop if we wanted. Instead of hypo, I would think she would leaning more towards hyper. She is due for a thyroid check this Dec.

Anyone have any insights here? I have stopped the zinc/mag and hormone creams all this past week. But she is not going to be able to go long with out the hormone cream. Her skin will become so tight and rigid she is going to start tearing with BM’s again…. So I need to resolve this and the ped and endo are not going to be very helpful. Going to call the pharmacist who compounded it and ask what he thinks too.
