Guest guest
Pharmacokinetics of Cigarette Smoke Within seconds of inhaling cigarette smoke, a bolus of nicotine travels from the carotid arteries to the brain where the molecules bind to nicotine receptors. Nicotine stimulates the norepinephrine and serotonin systems, enhancing concentration and memory and decreasing anxiety. This results in dopamine secretion that causes pleasurable sensations and relief of symptoms of nicotine deprivation. Nicotine also interacts with acetylcholine receptors, creating a variety of physiologic reactions. Some reactions are beneficial, such as suppressing appetite and pain, while others are not, such as elevated BP and nicotine addiction. Nicotine replacement therapy mimics but does not match these intense effects caused by the nicotine in cigarette smoke. (Fiore, M., & Westman, E. Using pharmacotherapy for cessation. Patient Care. 2001; 35(24):18-27.) I just read this today on Medscape.. have a son who wants to quit smoking too so my ears perked up at this because Bacopa is supposed to increase acetylcholine and increase serotonin which has a calming effect. In the case of my son, I think he smokes as way to ‘self medicate’ He says smoking calms he down considerably. So I think I may get him on some Bacopa along with the lobelia and see if that helps him over the rough spots?? (Bacopa) How it works According to scientists at the CDRI, a number of compounds have been identified in Bacopa, including bacosides A and B, two chemicals that improve the transmission of impulses between nerve cells in the brain. These bacosides regenerate synapses and repair damaged neurons, making it easier to learn and remember new information. Bacopa also increases serotonin levels, a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation.7 http://www.hfn-usa.com/articles/040225bacopa.htm Sounds like is ‘should’ work and he might be the kind of person who should take Bacopa on a regular basis anyway. Just thinking out loud….. anyone heard of Bacopa? I have used it on on and off the past couple of weeks with nothing short of astounding results with regards to cognitive abilities!! It’s a diuretic though, so that prevents me from just putting her on and keeping her on because of her heart.
