Re: Dana: Did you ever see high Lead level in the hair test during chelation?

We got high lead levels (red) in a hair test in August. My son had

always been in the green for lead, so this was very different for us.

That test also showed high copper, so I backed off the ALA and kept

just DMSA in, though gently. I retested his August test to confirm

the high lead and copper, and the test came back showing the same

trend. I don't know what caused the high lead (though I have my

theories, which do not include increased exposure), but it was

surprising since he had made nice progress over the summer. Then in

November, I retested, and lead and copper were back in the green.

Thank you Anne!

What are your theories? I'd like to hear them and why did you decide

to back off the ALA?

My concern is that the Lead can be made loose from the bones and can

possibly be redistributed into the brain (as you said my

theory...hopefully wrong...)

If that is a possibility, I'd like to know if it has been discussed

and what is the best course of action when that happens.

I am going to check the blood Lead level, just in case the hair

levels are not as reliable...what do you think?

Appreciate any input.

I think we moved a bunch of lead out of hiding during a growth spurt

(maybe encouraged with vitamin K list stuff). As for reducing ALA,

in most people, ALA inhibits excretion of copper (Andy discusses this

in his book). Since we were running high copper on the August test,

I backed off the ALA until copper was back in some reasonable range.

I think the fear of mobilizing so much lead that it redistributes to

the brain is something you don't need to worry too much if you are

following Andy's protocol. Low, consistent doses, should avoid most

problems.

Hopefully someone else will chime in if they have any other

ideas/thoughts.

My son had lead in the red (as well as some other toxics but not Hg) after about

25 rounds

of chelation. He hadn't met the counting rules and lead had been much lower

(high green?

I don't have the tests with me) before that.

It turned out to be a combination of chelation pulling stuff out AND new

exposure. We had

moved into an old house; the paint was in good shape but the old wooden doors

had been

stripped, and even though they no longer had paint on them, they tested high for

lead.

Even the doors that had a light coat of polyurethane tested high for lead.

Dagmar on this list alerted me to this and I'm forever grateful because I don't

think I'd

have figured it out.

A blood test for lead will show recent, high exposure, so if you think there's a

chance of that,

it would be a helpful test. If the exposure is old, or low, it won't show up.

Nell,

How long after you moved did n's hair test show high lead? I

ask because the only exposure I can imagine during the time Asher's

lead went up was a 10 day stay in an old farmhouse. I am not sure

if the house has lead, but it might. The kids who grew up there (my

husband's 1/2 siblings) definitely have some issues which look like

they could be attributable to lead. I did everything I could to

keep him in the new part of the house, but....

I don't have the records with me, but I think it was about 9 months. And it

included the door

to his room and the bathroom door, so he was touching them all the time. He

doubtless also

had exposure earlier from the old house we lived in from his birth to age 2.

Toys? Has he had access to any soil that might be contaminated? It's so

frustrating to feel like

you can;t keep the stuff out!

Asher's lead skyrocked from green (where it had always been) to red

over the summer. It is back down to green now. Over the course of

the summer he and I did a lot of traveling. There may have been

some exposure that I didn't look in to, but the most obvious

possibility is my father-in-law's house. In fact, we even left his

set behind for the summer! I was really wondering whether 10

days of not very much exposure could do this on a hair test. I

still don't think that is what was going on, but it will certainly

be on my mind when we next go to visit family!

Were you using DMSA the whole time?

I'd be doubtful of this too.

Yes, I was using it the whole time.

Thanks, Nell.
