Guest guest
At the Autism One conference Dr. Jill shared her recent research on Maternal Transsulfuration Metabolities. She presented these data: - ASD moms have higher GSSG (oxidized GSH) than the moms in the control group do. - The ration of GSH/GSSG is 17/8 in ASD moms and 31/10 in control moms. (You would want GSH to be higher, and GSSG to be lower. And in general GSH/GSSG is higher the better.) - SAH is higher in ASD moms and lower in control moms. (SAH is a methylation inhibitor. You would want this to be low.) - Homocysteine is higher in ASD moms and lower in control moms. (High homocycysteine will be converted back to high SAH.) Dr. Jill stated that she cannot draw a conclusion from the data whether this ASD mom metabolic profile exists before or after their children's diagnosis of autism, because both physical and psychological stress are able to induce this profile. But she believed that just the day-to-day life of being an ASD mom is probably sufficient to induce this profile. She recommended that the ASD moms take care of themselves by taking antioxidants that promote the production of GSH as well as B12 and folate to bring down homocysteine. Time to pop in a few supplements ourselves while giving them to our children.
