Just had a scary moment

My son went to take a bath and was in there for a very long time. I

checked on him and figured he was playing so I let him be. Then after

about an hour I went in and saw he had drained the bath and was

drinking water from the spout. He does this alot. I asked if he was

ready to come out and he refused and continued to drink the water

from the spout. I let him stay for another few minutes and went to

get him out. He was acting very strange and just sat in the empty tub

while I tried to coax him out, still continuing to drink from the

spout. He then urinated on himself (which he NEVER does...always goes

to the toilet). He made a few weird sounds and I couldn't tell if he

was distressed or laughing because he had his head down. I finally

got him out of the tub and he bagan to cry softly and grabbed ahold

of me. I took him to the bed and laid him down and he went into a

stiff fetal position and stared off while I put lotion on him. He's

non-verbal so I asked him to point if it hurt somewhere and he

didn't. I asked if he had to go poo in the potty and he shook his

head no. As I talked to him it seems like he was fading in and out of

reality. Normally my son is all smiles and giggly and active. He

would fade out and then all of a sudden look at me and smile, then

fade back out. It's 10 minutes later now and he's playing like

nothing ever happened. This has happened 2 other times that I can

remember, but it's a rare occurence. It scares the hell out of me

because it feels like something is happening to him and he can't tell

me. Any thoughts or similiar experiences?

I would get him to a doctor asap. It sounds like a seizure to me, but your

discription is somewhat different than the ones I have seen. Were the other

times after he drank water from the bathtub spout? Some pipes have lead in

them, I guess that could have triggered it. One way or the other, imo he needs

to be seen.

I agree.

Get seizures ruled out, try to get an EEG, when that happens, don't let them

tell you it's

fine, get a photocopy of the neurologist's interpretive report on the EEG.

Do you think he drank an excessive amount of water? If so he could be

throwing his electrolytes out of whack and this causes serious issues

including death from cardiac arrythmias. If he over intakes on fluids

like this the potassium and sodium levels can drop quickly and cause

confusion and stomach cramping. But it takes a while to reverse

(certainly longer then 10 minutes) so I am confused as to what

happened here. Interesting story and I would be curious to hear what

others feel about this one.
