Guest guest
This has been driving me crazy and I'm wondering if anyone else had this experience - or might have any idea why it's happening... We'll sit down to eat and my son (3) will be eating normally, then will stuff his mouth with food (he does this sometimes with NO issue) - and then will want to spit it all out. Well, once he starts doing this, we know what's coming. I'll grab all the food out of his mouth - but it's like he's set off a gag-reflex and will projectile vomit all over the place. It doesn't seem to be a stomach issue as once he's done, he'll start eating again and be totally fine. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this to happen?? Thanks for any input, I greatly appreciate it!
Guest guest
chuckling...I think I have his twin at my house...one of the toddlers here does this...and is worse when she is teething, or sinus-y, etc...but, this Will happen during " normal " moments. The Stuffing of the mouth, and the resultant gag reflex, has me rolling - it is soooo her! first, we avoid " real " squash (anything of that texture is Not on her list of foods to eat - hits her tongue & she is sooo done, it is over & we are changing clothes Bigger, tho, is the constant reminding " take one bite - chew, chew, chew. " It is my mantra with her. Started out with this for Every Single Bite, now I can mostly monitor. Also, on her less " self-regulating " days, I would hand feed her - which, as a toddler, is Not on her list of things she wants...which seemed to help her focus just that bit more, on her own. Just to avoid me feeding her...lol.. It probably took me a good month to figure out that it was just the too much food at once, that was setting her off. And that keeping tabs on the " one bite at a time " thing totally eliminated the gag/vomiting episodes. And, with her, any gagging at all, means she will vomit...eternally grateful that I did figure this one out!!...Poopy diaper butts I handle with aplomb & good humor, the vomiting thing - not so good. Definitely in the " drove me crazy " category.. fwiw - still chuckling wishing you the best answers elizabeth > > This has been driving me crazy and I'm wondering if anyone else had this > experience - or might have any idea why it's happening... > > > > We'll sit down to eat and my son (3) will be eating normally, then will > stuff his mouth with food (he does this sometimes with NO issue) - and then > will want to spit it all out. Guest guest
Sensory integration problem. Needs professional therapy to retrain chewing and swallowing. Last summer my son was screened by a therapist, who said that he needed big mouthfuls of food in order to just FEEL them inside. That combined with the oversensitization at the back of the throat... nerve-wracking to watch. http://www.sensory-processing-disorder.com/sensory-integration-dysfunction-sympt\ oms.html http://www.tsbvi.edu/Outreach/seehear/fall97/sensory.htm - Hokkanen Setting off gag-reflex Posted by: " hisblueeyes " hisblueeyes@... njshopgal Sun Jan 20, 2008 8:21 pm (PST) This has been driving me crazy and I'm wondering if anyone else had this experience - or might have any idea why it's happening...
