Yes a hair test can show you if he's started to excrete the toxic elements if his levels were low before. I think urine porphyrins might tell you this too but I'm not familiar with it. The counting rules wouldn't apply since you already know he has mercury. If you find that his lead level is elevated and if cost is an issue, you don't need to use DMSA in every ALA chelation round.
