Hi there,

My 10 yr old son has had a bad yeast flare up and is taking Nystatin

now. Concurrently he has been having TMJ type issues. His

pediatrician said it is TMJ and to go see a dentist about it. Our

dentist referred him to a specialist who is not covered by insurance.

Therefore I went online to research it and I found the below exchange

on the web site. I am wondering if there is a vaccine connection and

how can youget rid of TMJ? He was chewing a lot of gum for the last

two weeks also, which we have stopped now.

Thanks,

Farhin

Question: I was diagnosed with TMJ in March of this year. I have never

had symptoms in my life except a couple of days after I received a

meningitis vaccine. Since then I have been suffering with this awful

jaw pain, difficulty opening and chewing with my jaw, facial pain, and

pretty much all of the general symptoms. The only time I had anything

like this was a year ago in the hospital. I had a systemic reaction to

Reglan and Compezine. My jaw clenched down and I grinded my teeth and

back gums so hard I bled. Only with benadryl did my symptoms go away

after a few days. My jaw symptoms didn't return until after the

vaccine in spring 2006. I tried benadryl this year and nothing seems

to help. Ibuprofen seems to do little help also. Have you heard of any

links to the meningitis vaccine and jaw/facial pain?

Answer: The patient’s first experience sounds like a classic

phenothiazine-induced myotonia. On occasion, these reactions can

persist over long periods of time. The patient’s current condition

could reflect a persistent dystonia induced by Reglan or Compazine. I

am unaware of any association between a meningitis vaccine and a

temporomandibular disorder, though some vaccines can certainly produce

neurological complications. (Response by Dr. Milam)
