Guest guest
I'll bow to sherri's answer on this one, but it is my understanding that it's an airborne virus .... My oldest son had it when he was in Kindergarten. As far as I know it's one of those nusiance " diseases " like roseola. Fifth's Disease > Does anyone know how adults get this? Guest guest
That's awful...I've had that 2 times. I got REALLY bad mouth sores and found relief from a canker sore mouth wash that I got at CVS. It's very contagious! They gave me 800 mg Ibuprofen to take for the pain in my hands and feet which I found odd b/c after giving birth they didn't give me a prescription for anything!!! Fifth's Disease We finally took Caroline into the doctor and it turns out she doesn't have fire ant bites, but Fifth's Disease, aka Foot and Mouth Disease. Ugh!! There isn't anything that they can do for her, but we are stopping her Enbrel again for now and stopping her Prednisone taper. Hopefully she won't experience anymore setbacks! What a way to start off the new year! Alia and Caroline, age 2, poly and uveitis
Guest guest
Alia, If your daughter has fifth's disease and you are pregnant you probably should let your ob know. I was exposed in my second trimester and they had to do a few more ultrasounds because of it. If you have had fifth's before it isn't an issue. Guest guest
Alia, Fifths disease is totaly differant then Hand Foot and Mouth disease. You do need to make sure you know exactly which one you are dealing with. With Fifths the childs cheeks look like they have been slapped then they develop a lacy pattern rash on the trunk that then spreads to the arms and legs. With HFM you get sores in the mouth and on the hands and feet. Hugs Becki and 6 systemic
Guest guest
They can also do an antibody screen. They usually do one and then wait a few weeks and do it again...but definitely need to le tyour OB know. Guest guest
Becki - Thanks for the info. I just looked it up and Caroline has Hand, Foot, and Mouth, NOT fifth's disease. That is a relief! I wonder why they mentioned that. Oh well. Either way I am sure it's because of her lowered immune. Her rheumatologist has pulled her off Enbrel indefinitely. She is consulting with Dr. Vehe (her associate) and they are going to determine the next course of action for her. Hopefully it's cyclosporine and not Remicade. I am not quite ready for that one yet! Guest guest
Alia, In case you do have to move on to Remicade, I just want to let you know that our experience so far has been excellent. stopped Enbrel at the end of November and had her first Remicade infusion on Dec 6. She's only had 2 infusions so far, but we have no complaints at this time. She is closely monitored throughout the infusion and is premedicated with Benadryl and Tylenol. Now, being almost 13, can have a little fun with the nurses. She figured out that if she adjusts her breathing accordingly she can set off the alarms and send the nurses running. :-) And her rheumy is full of ideas about tricks to play that he is always happy to share with her! Guest guest
Alia, HFM disease ran rampant through s preschool class at age 3.Luckily he only went 2 days a week for 4 hours and didn't catch it.His little friend ,also systemic was full time and did catch it.Vanderbilts infectious disease doctors were called in because she was differant then the others, presentation wise,I guess. I don't mean to hurt you but Enbrel realy isn't the problem, most likely.Caroline is 2 yrs old and is on too high of a dose of Enbrel and MTX.Both doses need to be lowered and a 3rd drug added.Sounds awful but it's called triple combination DMARD therapy. You have heard s story and thats what it took for him.I do realize that Carolines immune system is low due to her age,she hasn't been exposed to this and that at day care.So recanting my statement, Enbrel may not be right at this time. It just breaks my heart.I remember how well she felt at AJAO and just took off through the crowd to shake her booty on stage.I wonder how many people took pics of her. Your just in a realy hard time right now.Weak immune system due to age and doubly so because of the JRA. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Guest guest
My dd called last night to report that our little one's cheeks were so red they looked like someone had slapped her. This rash has come and gone a couple of times, even appeared on her upper arm, hand and leg, and then disappears. She is slightly stuffy, no temps, eating everything in sight, sleeping well, plenty of energy and has missed no school. From what I have read, this seems fairly benign, anything I should know about or be worried about? Thanks, in advance,
Guest guest
My oldest had this a few years ago. It is a virus and is contageous, although my three little ones did not get it. It went away on its own within a several days and didn't cause her any problems at all besides the rash. Back then I didn't know about Virastop, but that might be something to try to help get rid of it faster if you have some on hand. Guest guest
Yep, we've got some Virastop, thanks, Sheresa. We've already got her on elderberry, she's seems fine. Guest guest
I don't really know how new it is. It is a human version of the parvovirus. Best I remember, it is supposedly the most contageous before the rash appears and I don't think there are any real complications to it for most children. It may be a bit more icky for a grownup, not sure though. Sheresa > > > > My dd called last night to report that our little one's cheeks were > so red they looked like someone had slapped her. Guest guest
could be an allergy to a chemical. My dd got that way if somebody with makeup put their cheek against hers, causing a reaction (I think from either the artificial colors or fragrance in the makeup). Guest guest
Yes, she had fair Irish skin and anything that touches her leaves a mark, but this is different and does look like the photos I saw of 5th disease. Guest guest
Yes, going around school, paper sent home last evening, just didn't find it :-) 5th disease is supposed to be a common communicable disease, but I never heard of it. I can say as viruses go, it's fairly nice, she hasn't missed a beat, not even a low grade fever. Here's hoping it stays that way, thanks for your good wishes. Guest guest
Not that new because my 12 year old had it when she was a toddler. She suffered no ill effects and got over it fairly quickly. Yes, contagious before the rash. No grown up in our family got it from her if that is any consolation. > > > > > > My dd called last night to report that our little one's cheeks > were > > so red they looked like someone had slapped her. Guest guest
My father is a retired pediatrician in a mid-sized market (Madison, WI). I remember stories of 5th disease growing up, and I am familiar with the story Dr. L tells. I'm 42. According to my shot/illness records (parents were good at doing this), I had 5th disease as a young child.
