[ ] DMSA dosage ? - was Oxidative Stress Relief

In response to my post, I was advised by and to start with

1/8 mg DMSA per pound of my kid's body weight and work up to 1/2 mg

per lb of weight max. I understood from my reading in the archives,

that Andy said 1 mg per lb of body weight of kid was the maximum. Am

I wrong about this?

====>Most people do much better with the 1/8-1/2 mg per lb, it was discovered.

I saw our DAN today. He gave me a hard time about not doing a

challenge, but I said the hair test and urine porphyrin were enough

for us to proceed to chelation, especially now too, since his stool

test showed his yeast problem is mostly gone. He said he did not want

to give a chelator to someone without " proof " of metal toxicity. He

wants me to do a UTM test during the first round. I am concerned that

if he doesn't " see " enough metals coming out in this test, that he

will not want us to continue with the DMSA. Do we need him if this is

the case, or can we get DMSA without a prescription?

====>No, you do not need him and you can get Dmsa from http://www.vrp.com all

by yourself. Grrrr to the dr, but keep him as you many want some testing

done.====>

Our DAN has called in a prescription for DMSA to be compounded in 15mg

capsules. My son weighs 30lbs. Is the 15mg too much to start with?

===>Yes, too much, take each capsule and divide by 3 to start. You can just

eyeball the capsule into thirds and put each into another capsule.

Should I do a half a capsule as a starting point?

====>You could also do this, but it's better to start low and work up.

I guess that would

be 1/4mg per pound of weight. 1/8mg seems like way too little somehow

to get the job done.

=====>We never used more than 10 mgs of Dmsa and ours did just fine.====>

Plus, how would I ever measure that from the

capsule? Perhaps I am letting our DAN influence me too much, he seemed

to think that this was very little chelator to use to start, but could

see no harm in an ultra conservative approach, he said. Will there be

anything likely coming out in the urine initially with the low dose

chelator?

====>Maybe some, mercury doesn't always come out first.

I know that this is not dispositive, but our doc seems hung

up on this somehow.

Can I start with 1/4mg per lb, has anyone started with this much before?

===>Yes, some have started with 1/4 mg a lb, we did and she did fine.

Good luck, Irene,

Thanks. Irene

I'd like to add to the previous answers (which were great) that you can

get the DMSA compounded without a prescription, since you can buy DMSA

without a prescription. I get our ALA compounded just by contacting the

pharmacy myself and telling them the amount I need per cap. They charge

me $10 per 100 caps for that service. I even brought in my own ALA,

since I knew the pharmacist. But, they managed to locate a cleaner ALA

for me, and when they run out of mine will just order some. Then it

will be the price of the ALA plus the $10 per 100 compounding charge. It

also is very handy that the pharmacist is considering chelating too.

Since that was the case, I passed on Andy's book to her so she could

read more. :-) Maybe your DAN! needs a copy of Andy's book so he can

feel more comfortable with the slow, safe approach?
