Why nitrous oxide for sedation?

Is nitrous given just to calm them for the IV sedation or is it used

throughout the procedure?

My son is having surgery in a week and of course I'm going to jump up and

down and insist they don't use it. If he can just get the IV he's great with

that.

I'm suspecting my son had nitrous with his scope in September 2007 even

though I said no nitrous. How can I find out?
