Guest guest
Dylan is 4.4 years old. He does have a PECS book, but only uses it at school. Occasionally he'll use it at home but I tried so hard to make him independent (going to bathroom by himself, getting his own drink or snack) before it was introduced that I think he's confused. At home he just goes and gets what he needs without assistance and at school he has to use the book to get what he wants. I'm torn by this because I like the fact he knows how to do things without assistance but I know he needs to learn to ask for things. I've done the " withholding until he attempts words " method and he'll just walk away. (stubborn little kid!) It just confuses me. I've heard him, out of nowhere, use perfectly formed words in relation to what he's doing (i.e., " good " while drinking juice, " baby " while looking at a doll) As soon as he's asked to repeat it, he clams up. His idiot ped neuro told me he'd never talk and labeled him " non-verbal " . But, I KNOW he's capable of language....just resistant to using it. I wonder if it's a metal or viral issue blocking his ability.....or if it's something else. Shepard Salzer <_Shepard@...> wrote: How old is he? Is he getting any alternative communication options (sign, PECS, communication device?) Those often help promote speech. S S " pre-verbal " vs. " non-verbal " Posted by: " maggie_orourke " maggie_orourke@... maggie_orourke Tue Feb 19, 2008 9:07 pm (PST) What is the difference between pre-verbal and non-verbal? My son babbles all the time and will occasionally say a word. He'll have that word for a while and then it will be gone. He's been doing this since 2 years old. Does this mean he's capable of speech, just not able to use it? I always say he's non-verbal....am I wrong? Is he actually just pre-verbal? We are chelating right now and I must admit....I really want him to talk more than anything else. _______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web! =======================================================
