- I had both problems, and was told the same by my ortho, but then my

gastro. said it could be b/c of my back. In the end, I ended up getting worse

intenstinal problems after my first surgery, then they both got way better after

the revision. My current surgeon suggested that the bowel and bladder problems

were possibly due to compression of the cauda equina nerve roots at the end of

the spinal cord, caused by my spinal stenosis. I had diarrhea very frequently,

and incontinence (I had to go right then - no forewarning). I know there are

others who have experienced similar problems (IBS,bladder), who I've met with

scoliosis as well. Cena

I found that both bladder, and bowel difficulties were hand in hand with what kind of back pain had the upper hand at any given time. Literally depending on what hurt most, I had some reasonable idea which problem I was going to get. Thankfully, all was resolved after my revision surgery. I'm sure the painkillers had something to do with the bowel issues, but they definitely were not the whole of the story, and there was a particular kind of pain associated with right leg pain that seemed to be the biggest culprit of loose motions and outright diarrhoea.

bought some oxy powder and from what came out today as a BM.. it was a dark

was probably impacted. My son is 20/m old and did fine no gas or stomache upset

Flax seeds have helped us here during constipation. I grind them, and

give about 1/2 tablespoon with meals(2 times).

Check here for ideas

At my house, vitamin C was constipating because it was pulling

viruses, and viral die off tends to cause a lot of yeast. Try

increasing the yest protocol, and add some magnesium.

I have read a few of the posts on here about this topic....I am 33, have never

had any bladder control problems, except the occasional cough too hard/laugh too

hard & pee a little bit, but that's after 2 kids in 2 years. Nothing I would

consider a problem....anyway...since my injury I wet my pants if I bend over,

laugh or cough at all...now I am wetting the bed, and I wet in my brand new

chair the other day. I wear a pad at this point 24 hours a day, I am ready to

start wearing depends underpants. I can't hold it if I have to pee and sometimes

I can't even feel when I have to go. I talked to my Dr. about it and he said

that it is the nerve damage and I asked him about losing bowel control and he

said it is possible, I asked because if I need to have a bowel movement there is

no waiting at all, I have to go right then. He said that this is a progression

of the nerve damage. It is very frustrating, very embarrassing, and I am tired

of it all.....this is

just one more symptom of what is going on with my back issues.

Does anyone know what kind of bowel complications can arise with

spinal problems?

Thanks, Caleb .

You can have  bowel and bladder issues from the Sciatic nerve , most Drs feel

this is an emergency and will do surgery ASAP .    Fortunately I  have had not

of this , the only problem I have had is after surgery with constipation from

the  anesthesia and meds .

I'm not disputing the possibility of it being " dumping " , however, that is

usually an isolated problem for people who have had a removal or shortening of

the intestinal/stomach tract via surgery. I've had a gastric bypass and until

I actually experienced dumping, I had no idea what it REALLY was...or at

least I *thought* I knew what it was. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Typically, an individual will vomit and suffer diarrhea simultaneously, adding

in

the profuse sweating and racing heart, sometimes the shakes too; but

different folks suffer from different symptoms.

As a result of the cervical and lumbar spinal damage caused by the car

wreck, I have been told by five of my doctors that I very well may lose control

with both urinary and bowel functions eventually, and that will be 'normal'

nerve damage progression. UGH.

Best regards,

Patty A

What type of problems are you having? From your previous emails,

bowel incontinence isn't the problem, but overactive digestion? Look

up " Dumping Syndrome " on the internet (you will know from the

symptoms explained if this could be your problem). The symptoms can

appear after each time you eat. With modifications in your diet, it

can be a thing of the past.

that could arise from cervical spine problems?

I have basilar Invagination and there is a risk with this cervical spine

disorder or my brainstem becoming compressed. I do not have bowel incontinence,

or anything even close to it - I have perfect control over them.

My problems with my bowels started about two years ago and started with not

being able to tolerate one food after another that I used to have no problem

with. Within a half hour, my stomach will start gurgling like i have to do a

bowel movement, but I don't have to rush to the bathroom, I can hold it just

fine, its just very overactive digestion thats completely abnormal for me.

I'm a 24yr. old male.

so I was just wondering if this could be a problem with spinal cord compression,

even though I do not have incontinence, before I call up my neurosurgeon.

Thanks, Caleb.
