I have done that too... but with kids you need to be a bit more careful.... I also use lavendar Jen <jemma56@...> wrote:

Hi Suzi, I just use a cotton bud dipped in Teatree oil for a stuffy nose. It's better than any over the counter nasal spray and keeps the nose clear for hours. I also put one drop under my tongue if there is a sign of a cold coming and that nips it in the bud. Teatree oil is said to be poisonous so I never use more than a drop. It's good for dabbing on mosquito bites too.

I am wondering because I have been having the fan on at night in our bedroom and it seems to be drying out the inside of my nose to where it bleeds until i get up and moisture is allowed back to it... I need this fan to circulate the air so I can sleep well... but darn.. seems to irritates my nose... is there something to aleiviate(sp?) this? Remember I do not have a cold at this time.... just the insides of my nose are irritated by the drying out effect of the fan....

The concoction I made for while I had a stuffy nose is too... cooling for this.. as I have tried it.. seems when i do not have a stuffy nose it is harsh....the ingredients of it is menthol, camphor, peppermint, eucalytus, rosemary in olive oil....Suzanne <suziesgoats@...> wrote:

It might not be the fan itself. Check the humidity in the room.

Your nose might be irritated from the air not having enough moisture

in it.

This can be a real problem in dry climates or during the winter when

the heat is on.

Perhaps all you need do is get more humidity into the air.

Beyond that, I use a " neti pot " every morning when I get up.

They sell them at health food stores and some yoga studios. Its a

little " Alladin's lamp " shaped ceramic pot that one fills with warm

water that some non iodined salt has been dissolved in (the same

solute taste as one's tears).

While standing head tipped at the sink and breathing through one's

mouth the saline water is poured from the neti pot into one nostril.

Because you'd be breathing through your mouth there wouldn't be

any gagging and the warm saline solution would simply pour out

the other nostril.

Blow your nose and then do the neti pot at the other nostril.

The theory is that it adds moisture to the irritated membranes.

This works quite well for stuffy noses as well. It helps loosen

things up and draw mucus from farther back in the sinuses.

My husband swears by his when he gets a sinus headache.

I think its very helpful to do if someone has taken medication to

" dry things up " during a head cold. Snot has a function. A good

mucus flow gets rid of opportunist bacteria.

After doing neti pot in the morning I generally need to blow my nose

a couple more times within the first half hour, but unlike past

winters, I haven't had a real cold yet this season since I started

using a neti pot consistantly.

It might be an honest factor to my good luck.

It could just be that your house is dry.. what happens when you don't turn on the fan? And is the fan blowing directly on you?
