Guest guest
Today I was pumping gas, and for some reason, the gasoline suddenly flew out of the gas tank like a tsunami, soaking me with gas from head to toe. It was the freakiest thing I've ever experienced! It was like being hosed down with gas! I ran like a maniac into the convenience store and they told me the remedy is splashing lots of water in my eye, so I did. They asked me if I wanted to go to an ER "just in case", and, for my peace of mind I said "yes!" so they got an ambulance to take me. The hospital irrigated my eyes with quarts of whatever they use, then checked my eyes and put some ocular antibiotic in in case of any infection. I passed on the tetanus shot they offered (they said many people do). I learned 3 things....always be aware of what you're doing, never look directly at a gas tank while you're filling it ;-), and, doctors can come in handy during an emergency. LOL! Guest guest
.....a person can die frm gas poisoning... I realized I knew nothing about what harm gasoline on the body and eyes can or cannot do. The doctor told me my contacts (which I removed as soon as I could) might have helped by absorbing some of the gas that would have otherwise have flowed into my eye and also that I was lucky that my reflexes made me shut my mouth as swallowing gasoline would have really created a big problem. Yes, I feel very fortunate, although it scared the **** outta me! I kept thinking...."I don't have any herbs for THIS one!!! I think better get to a hospital" lol! Live and learn. Guest guest
OMG Gloria... Glad you're alright... did it kick back when it got full? Suzi...I'm not 100% sure how it happened. I was talking to the paramedic on the way to the hospital, and he said that sometimes you can create a vacuum in the tank if you have the nozzle in too far. Then it builds up and if the gas is nearing the top and you pull the nozzle out, the pressure comes off that vacuum and you can have anything from a slight spurt to a geyser of gas shoot out. I had the geyser. I instinctively shut my eyes immediately and threw my hands over them, but I was so soaked with gas (face included) that I knew if I opened my eyes gas was just going to run into them but I had no choice. So I opened them so I could run for help, and sure enough I got an eyeful of gasoline. I can't say if it was anyone's fault, but just be very careful when you fill a gas tank! Guest guest
Might I suggest that in the future never stand in front of the filler tube while filling. Always stand off to the side, that way if it happens again only your hand gets soaked They thing is... I WAS standing off to the side. The gas gushed out so ferociously that it soaked everything in it's path. The entire side of the car was soaked in gasoline and so was I. Like I said, it spurted out like a tidal wave. I was standing up and over to the side, and it drenched my hair, clothes, etc...that's how high it went. Yep..glad I got myself checked out and am ok. Thanks Don!
