I obtained a Juiceman Jr juicer yesterday (thank you freecycle). After doing some research last night I determined that as a diabetic -even though it is managed with diet & exercise - that fruit juicing -at least as outlined in the 3 day fast is not for me. It will spike my sugars too much. So now I'm on the look out for vegetable juicing recipes to help move me toward a juicing & raw food diet.

Debbie,

My diabetes is pretty much under control. I take no medications for

my diabetes. I control it with a good eating plan (no more than 45

carbs per meal) and exercise. I don't know at what stage your

friend's diabetes is but if she is having problems getting her sugar

under control then fruit juicing is probably not the best thing for

her. That is my opinion. She should obviously check with her doctor

and/or nutritionist. I don't know what your friend is eating

either. For years I was a closet eater until I realized that

everyone could see what I was eating - my body showed what I had been

eating all those years. To avoid consuming too much sugar, always

drink as many vegetable juices as fruit juices when juicing. I would

think that your friend would do well on the raw food eating plan and

then once her sugars are under control she could try something like

juicing. If, as you say, she is having major problems in controling

her diabetes I would not do anything drastic without consulting an

expert. BTW, I got my initial information at mercola.com (i think

that is the correct spelling). The " experts " on this group may have

other advice for you and your friend.

Don't take the following as gospel. Read them, share them with your

friend, do your research, etc. Diabetes isn't something to play

with - especially with her problems controlling her sugars.

Debbie, I just found this:

An important situation in which to be cautious about doing a juice

fast would be in cases of diabetes or in someone who has ever passed

out from low blood sugar - this is rare and usually only the case in

diabetes. (In cases of diabetes, I would strongly recommend a

SUPERVISED vegetable juice fast, with frequent monitoring of the

blood sugar - the high blood sugar problem can go away so quickly

that the regular dose of insulin or other blood sugar-lowering

medication can make the blood sugar go too low.) Diabetics can also

experience blood sugar peaks, so it is important for them to monitor

the blood sugar frequently during a juice fast. If juicing cannot be

done in cases of diabetes, then the next best thing is a completely

raw, vegan diet. People who are not diabetic do not need to monitor

their blood sugar, since their blood sugar control mechanisms are

functioning fine, and they do not have problems juicing.
