Hello Helen

Thanks for asking Helen, it means a lot when you ask how I'm doing.

My cardiologist had me up my Coreg to 25 mg BID so I'm back into the

feeling terrible state again but it does make me better in the long run.

It'll be interesting to see if he decides we should try the 50 mg BID

level since my weight is borderline for deciding whether 25 mg or 50 mg

should be the maximum dosage.

I flew to Canada in order to renew my passport and my work visa.

Having a bit of trouble hooking up my VPN via cable modem back to the

office so that I can work from here. I know they already have issues

in Portland that I need to address. Worse case scenario would be to

pop into the office here in Calgary and see if they can let me use a

spare desk for a while. It's difficult to give people a warm and comfy

feeling when you're two thousand miles away.

It should be interesting how I fare with the Thanksgiving dinner (it's

the Canadian Thanksgiving this year) since it's still going to be a

traditional meal rather than a low sodium. Canadian diets tend to be

slightly lower in sodium than American diets but not by much.

I think I might get my flu shot while I'm up here since there's likely

to be another shortage back in the States.

It's kinda strange here cause all the stores here have signs up with

American flags on them saying that they are accepting donations for the

Canadian Red Cross for the September 11th tragedy. Basically the

American flag is everywhere and this is another country, one would

expect it in Houston but in Calgary?

Hello Helen

The Coreg is hard on you for the first two to six weeks after each

dosage increase. I upped the dosage on Monday night so I have at least

a couple of weeks to go before things settle back down. I think that

on Friday I was a bit worse off than expected because I had run out of

Digoxin on Thursday, I had intended to pick up the prescription on my

way in to work so that I'd only be an hour or two off the schedule but I

forgot and wound up picking it up after work so chances are that my

digitalis levels were out of whack temporarily. Digitalis doesn't

actually do anything to help the situation other than make the heart

beat strongly and it is debated as to whether or not it's even necessary

but ti does make you feel better.

I'll be in Canada through the 16th of October. That way, I manage to

hit my younger sister's birthday, the Canadian Thanksgiving and my

mother's birthday. Thanksgiving in Canada is defined as the second

monday of October so tomorrow is the official Thanksgiving. We already

had the Turkey dinner last night at the Hogden's place since some of

them were flying away Thanksgiving day (cheaper airfare). The only

problem was that the stuffing and the gravy were really heavy on the salt.

Still working on the VPN link. Kinda frustrating, making sure that the

VPN stuff works for all employees is someone else's job yet every time

I'm set up remotely, I find out that they failed to consider the concept

of remote NAT's when they designed the darn thing.

Most fresh foods don't have a lot of sodium in them except cheese.

However sodium is used in all manners of preparation to preserve the

food. All canned foods have sodium added because the canning process

removes a lot of flavour so sodium is used to pick up what's left of the

flavours. The same is true with frozen foods but to a lesser extent

and of course pickled anything and any ham, smoked or cured meats are

high in sodium. Basically to be low sodium, everything needs to be

made from scratch from fresh ingredients.

One thing to look out for is that the low fat products all have extra

sodium to make up for the lack of fat in taste so it's actually better

to avoid the low fat specialty products.

Continental airlines idea of a first class low sodium meal was a salad

with a chicken breast, low fat salad dressing and a package of Mrs. Dash

along with the usual salt and pepper shakers. Close but if they just

did a vinaigrette, then it would be much lower sodium. The low fat

dressing was probably worse than the regular dressing. Shouldn't

complain though, at least they upgraded me to first class and actually

transferred my special meal request this time with the upgrade.

Hello Jessi

I'm better, the parents arrived last weekend and they are here for three

weeks. The fever hasn't returned except for one spell a couple of

nights ago but I think that was due to a bit of hypoglycemia. I've

taken to eating bagels just to have something with a low glycemic index

so that the sugars get released more slowly. My Doctor(s) are

concerned about my blood tests showing me to be anemic. Wound up

buying ugly generic syringes last night cause the pharmacy ran out of

B & D's, bought my dad a BP monitor so that he'd stop playing with mine

(He's decided to take a whole bunch of readings to show his Doctor when

he gets back home). My ankle still twinges but I can stand without the

ankle brace now. The bruises on my arm from all the blood tests at the

hospital have cleared up, now I have bruises on my stomach from the

insulin shots but I'm getting better at giving myself the shots (still

freaks me out a bit to shove a needle into myself).

OK, Truth time !!! Are you a DR.??? Or Have been??? :o) Or have you learned all that you know from you becoming ill??? I so wish I could remember all that you do :o)

I will ask the Dr. about the grapefruit one, I so love to eat grapefruit... Watercrest, can take it or leave it... If we have chop suey, I will get some that way, I really don't think a couple of slices will cause that much trouble would it???

Did the California storm come anywhere near you???

Are you off through the Holidays now??? Or do they keep you slaving away then too???

I do Thank-You for the things that you do let us know about, about meds and tests and such... That Helps us out a LOT!!!

((( Grapefruit Hugs )))

Helen

Hello Helen

If I remember correctly, grapefruit tends to double the absorption rate

of some medications. Maybe you can ask the Dr. which ones it doubles

and simply cut those pills in half...

I would suspect that watercrest has natural salicylic acids and they

probably occupy the receptor sites for your Migrain pills but the Dr.

should be able to come up with alternatives that don't use the same

receptor sites. Also, you may be able to take the migraine pills first

to occupy the receptor sites with the meds and then take the watercrest

(you may want to wait a while between the two).

Hello Helen

My older sister is a doctor and my younger sister is a nurse so I get

more than my fair share of medical trivia. Our parents always said

that we could be either Engineers or Doctors, my older sister went into

medicine, I went into engineering, my younger sister went into both.

In college, I was often mistaken for a Doctor because I would go from my

chemistry lab over to pick up my older sister were the Doctors hide out

but I would still have my lab coat on. At one of the companies that I

worked at, they had a practice of only hiring Phd's from Ivy leauge

schools, I got in because I bailed them out a few times when I was

working for their client . At that company they kept mistaking me for

a Doctor as well. Later I worked at a University for a while and they

kept mistaking me for a Doctor there as well. Then at another company,

because I had previously worked at a company that would only hire Phd's,

a rumour went around that I had one from Harvard or Cambridge. It

probably didn't help that whenever somebody asked about Harvard or

Cambridge, I was able to tell them about a great restaurant or pub down

the street as I was often there with a previous company.

It was my older sister who said I would be dead within two years when I

was diagnosed with CHF, that was a year and eight months ago. My

cardiologist says it's a miracle that he can't take credit for, that I

did it on my own.

My older sister used to get ticked off because she would always be

mistaken for a nurse while I was mistaken as a Doctor. My younger

sister also gets mistaken as a Doctor, often as my older sister, much to

my older sister's chagrin.

Hello

Well nothing in business is a straight deal. The wages that I'm

charging is higher for strategic reasons not just because it's nice to

be paid more. Basically the rate is set so that it makes sense for the

company to hire me on with benefits. Currently, trying to get hired on

with benefits would be difficult to arrange politically but getting

contracted at the higher rate is easy, once contracting it suddenly

becomes reasonable to just hire me on with benefits. Of course, this

may not be what will happen because there is something else in the works

involving creating a new subsidiary company.

I'm not too worried about the healthcare just yet because the COBRA can

continue for up to 18 months so I have another year on it. After that,

I may have to find some form of individual medical insurance either by

myself or through a professional association like IEEE (which means

reactivating my membership) or a group like MENSA or AAA. The trick

will be to carry over pre-existing conditions, the argument that

technically my pre-existing conditions (CHF and Diabetes) should've

killed me by now (CHF patients typically die within 2 to 5 years of

diagnosis, I was diagnosed in April of 2001 with an EF of 15%, they

didn't think I would make it through the weekend back then so I told

them to just pencil me in for the Monday appointment instead of

hospitalizing me for the weekend) and hence has theorectically expired

won't hold much weight.

Hello Helen

I returned to Houston last sunday but I leave again on Saturday.

Basically I'm back just to track down where all my meds went and where

my insulin wound up being delivered to, see the Doctors and to get

another medical travel plan since you can't extend such plans.

I am finding that I'm coughing up a lot of mucous lately, it's clear so

that's good but it gets worse as the day progresses, to the point where

getting to sleep is quite difficult, coughing it up at night is more

like hacking or vomiting. The GP says it's probably just allergies, of

course I did try to point out that the seasons are reversed in Rio and

this is happening both there and here, worse over there. I think that

ever since that bout of pneumonia that landed me in hospital down south,

I've had more mucous to expel than my overworked cilia can handle and a

backlog builds up through the day. When I lie down to sleep, it

becomes easier for the cilia to bring the mucous up and starts to do so

in quantities and frequency that is making me gag. I'm perfectly fine

in the morning so I think that's when the cilia all gets caught up. Of

course, this is just my opinion, but if it is the case, I need to find a

way to rest semi-reclined several times through the day to let the cilia

catch up and preferably enough of the resting so that they can recover

and heal. Just like with the heart, I told the Doctor to just get me

to the point where I can sleep and then I'll be able to heal.

Unfortunately, I'll probably be quite busy the next few weeks and

there's no way to have a recliner around the various offices that I'll

be in.

Hi ,

I'm so glad that you were taken care of when you got back to the states... Lets Hope that your Not in the 5%!!! Its about time that the odds came your way for a change... That nasty med you were taking is probably why you didn't remember to get your breakfast... Now Me, I'd drive off after paying and wouldn't even realize it until I became very hungry or got home... For me thats a Normal day :o)

Keep us posted as to what the Dr. finds out Mon., If you get worse before then, get to ER...

Hello HelenThe Doctor prescribe Levaquin, Allegra and Hydrocodone/Homatropine syrup so that I could get to sleep. On Saturday, I became very very tired around 4:00 pm and I basically slept through Sunday. It seems that on Sunday, the coughing subsided a fair bit, at least I wasn't coughing constantly anymore but the phlegm that I was coughing up was no longer clear, it became yellowish green clumps type of stuff and the coughs were much deeper with deep inhalation at the beginning. On Monday, I was again very tired almost like back when I had CHF. For example, I went through a drive through for breakfast because I was late for work but I forgot to pick up the food from the second window after paying at the first. I was better on Tuesday and Wednesday though the coughing picked up slightly. Thursday evening around 5pm, I was dead tired, almost shaking as if low on glucose but I knew that I wasn't, took a nap till 8:30 pm and I was fine. I'm out of antibiotics now and the allegra ran out as well. I started sneezing non-stop a day after the Allegra ran out so I took some Claritin and that stopped the sneezing. I've set a Dr.'s appointment for Monday morning to see what else can be done. According to the Internet, that Levaquin is nasty stuff. It's the same antibiotic they gave me by IV and orally in Rio for the pneumonia. I think I probably had some minor reactions to the anti-biotic, mostly periods of sweating and being hot and a little nauseous but that would be better than relapsing into pneumonia. Apparently, the standard course of treatment with this antibiotic is seven days for 95% of the cases. I'm probably in the other 5%.Regards,

Given your pain I bet you have thorasic troubles, too, maybe youcan get it looked into?Too bad you can't get chiropractic care, wish you could so you could get some relief :(Take care,

I've developed carpel tunnel in both hands and I'm looking into trigger point massage therapy to ease it. I know personally of 2 people who have had it work for them. It's something you don't necessarily have to go and pay for - you or your partner can learn it. My guy is good with his hands so I'm going to find a book that describes it and try it at home.
