Suzi,

Good article....only I wish they hadn't thrown in the animal

comparisons since there really isn't any, and that sort of thing might

make someone question the credibility of the entire piece ....the ones

that don't know the rest is good info.

Horse, cow, deer are ruminants....the gorilla eats up to 60lbs of

vegetation per day and has a huge gut to accomodate it, which takes up

much of its body and leaves it with a reduced lung capacity.

Man became the opposite with a large lung capacity and a small gut.

Meat eating requires only a small gut....the increased lung capacity

meant more oxygen supply....this meant more oxygen to the brain...and

increased brain function and size.

The brain at rest uses oxygen and glucose at 10 times the rate of the

rest of the body. So anyway our adoption of meat eating gave us our

brain 'power'....I guess we could argue if that's good or bad....hee,

hee....anyway makes the gorilla a kinda conterproductive example.

The elephant eats " over-ripe and fermenting fruit " and as " wasteful

eaters, they often destroy as much as they eat " It has a huge caecum

for digestion and nutrient absorbtion, and its intestines are about 19

meters long...approx. 60 ft. long.

What would happen if you ate nothing but grass and hay? You would

probably starve. But cows eat grass and hay almost exclusively, yet

they grow big and fat. Why is this? Because cows, like other ruminant

animals, have a special type of stomach called a rumen, which is home

to billions of microbes which can eat grass and hay. These bacteria,

fungi and protists provide nutrients that the cow can digest. Without

these microbes, the cow would die.

I couldn't help myself on this one....it sorta jumped out and grabbed

me by the throat. ;-)

It looks like other great and sound arguments should be used instead

of comparing us to other animals ...who have totally different

anatomies and physiologies.
