Oh my!! Pretty strong stuff! The 35% is used for industrial cleaning. I believe you should dilute it 10:1 with water to make a 3% solution.

Subject: Help needed, hydrogen peroxide

Hi all,

Well, I have my friend who just had his wisdom teeth out staying with me for a few days. I purchased a quart of 35% hydrogen peroxide. Hmm, I am suddenly thinking that I screwed this up, so please have mercy on me. Anyway, I put just a little in a cup, and he swished it in his mouth, then spit it out. I accidentally touched the stuff with the tip of my finger. My finger itches and burns as I write this, although the burning is decreasing. He reported that his mouth is also burning and that the stuff bubbled up into his nose. He also says that his stomach is burning although he spit the hydrogen peroxide out rather than swallwoing it.

Okay, I'll bet that I should have diluted it, right? Did I do something harmful here? Were these reactions to be expected? How should we proceed in future?

Thanks so much for any assistance you can give,

Hi TerriLynne,

Yep, you should have diluted. You should never use hydrogen peroxide at

a strength greater than 3%. You might be able to get away with 6% but

best to dilute to 3%. I can imagine his mouth is burning alright.

Hi Gala,

I know you are right. I just didn't think of it. He says his mouth doesn't hurt anymore, that it didn't hurt for long, so I hope that no harm was done.

Hi TerriLynne,

For every tablespoon, cup, teaspoon, drop, etc of 35% hydrogen peroxide

add in 12 - 13 of distilled water. So if you use 1 cup of 35% hydrogen

peroxide use 12 - 13 cups of distilled water.

HTH.

You are right. That is even stronger than the volume they use to bleach hair. Where did you even buy that stuff? For rinsing your mouth use only the 3% solution that is sold in drug stores. I wouldn't even dilute that 35% one. 3% peroxide is cheap (maybe 69 cents a bottle??), and I'd just get that.

And I strongly caution against using the store bought 3% as it is full

of all kinds of goodies to keep it stable. I use 30% as that is the only

strength they have over here and I dilute it to 3%. I use only food

grade though or better. They use the 90% in rocket propulsion systems.
