i am doing really well today. not much pain but a little weak from not eating

much. I go back to the oral surgeon on the 13th to have my stitches out. i

have to call a general dentist to make an appointment to have an impression

made. Then i can eat real food.

I will check in tomorrow.

I never thought of the ensure for myself. I think i will have jason get some

for me. Has to be chocolate though or i won't drink.

I am not feeling so hot right now though. My thoart is sore. i think i caught

what had over the weekend. I am on an antibotic right now so that

should help. I just hate not feeling good and i hate the way my gums are

itching. The stitches are poking me in the lip too. Boy do i sound like a

mess.

Well off to go lay down again

I'm glad you are starting to feel better. Hang in there, you'll soon be

chomping away with your new chompers!!! When my jaw was broken, my mom

would put my complete meal in the blender, and I had to drink it. Some

things were pretty gross, but she always had lots of jello and puddings to

wash it down with. Those were the days before Ensure. Maybe you should

drink some Ensure so that you get adequate nutrition. It

may make you feel better.

You ARE a mess! Mouth pain really stinks. Stitches stink more.

To get sick on top of this makes you feel like crawling in a hole.

Itching is good, it means healing. It will be over soon. Just keep

telling yourself that as you slug down the chocolate Ensure. You

need to keep up your strength. Even slim fast has a lot of nutrients, so

if it tastes better, it may help.

Hope you feel better soon.

On teeth: I'm 41 and I've spent over $15,000 on my teeth (no cosmetic work!)

since the beginning of 1995. I've always had trouble with them, even since

childhood, despite a sound diet and excellent oral hygiene. My teeth are

worse than any person in my family, even my parents (who are in their

mid-60s). I've had teeth break, several abscesses, many root canals, filling

after filling, and so on. I am still in the process of having work done! I'm

getting really sick of it, and my dentist and endodontist are trying their

best to try to figure out what is going on, but no answers yet.

And naturally enough: THEY LOOK GOOD! Oh, the irony of it all!!!!!

I'll vouch for that! you have beautiful teeth. I am wondering if it

is related to osteoporosis. Another research project for me. Teeth are

bone, and if our bones can erode, why not our teeth?

I've asked about the connection again and again. I've asked every doctor,

too. I can say that my dentist and endodontist do seem to be thinking about

it. The doctors pretty much blow it off. A shrug of the shoulders is the

best I usually get. Sometimes a question about possibly having early

Sjogren's syndrome and it being responsible (I do have clinically dry eyes,

but don't seem to have a terribly dry mouth).

My dentist doesn't think it is unreasonable to think there is a connection,

yet he can't say what exactly it is. Could it be that my mouth chemistry is

off? Like a pH problem or enzyme problem? Could it be that I can't fight

bacteria like a normal person could and that's why I have so much decay or

abscesses?

I wonder about osteoporosis like questions, too. Like bone/tooth density and

mineralization/demineralization issues. I think maybe I should get a bone

density test! That might be interesting. I know you fought for that, a,

even though the doc (s?) didn't think it was necessary.

I have no periodontal disease and no loose teeth. In fact, my front teeth

have are still intact. Not a molar remains untouched though. And it's not as

if I drink Coke or coffee all day, eat chocolate covered toffee by the

pound, chew ice and popcorn kernels, and never brush or floss. I'm

ridiculously careful with my chompers!!!!

I just don't think this angle has been studied enough.

Dear Rainy Sue:

I feel bad for you after reading your email about your teeth. I had the same

problem. Maybe I can help.

I went to a Dental School that is affiliated with a College of Medicine and

Dentistry. Do you by any chance live in NJ?

They treat you a lower fee because you have a disability.

In NJ it is called UMDNJ. University of Medical and Dental of NJ. They have

Dental schools in a lot of the main big cities. This is in Newark, NJ. Are

you near any main cities? I hope you can get some help. They did a

wonderful job with my teeth. I was very pleased. Sincerely, Colletti

has more cavities then the other boys do and his old dentist in vermont

said he thought it was from his meds. The dentist also said that has a

hard time losing his baby teeth. You see jesse's teeth will loosen up like

they are gonna come out then they will tighten back up and they do that for

about 3 months and the only way to get the baby tooth out is to have the

adult tooth grow in behind it and push it out. This causes alot of pain for

jesse and he can't eat sometimes because of it and also the JRA affects his

jaw. Sometimes he isn't able to open his little mouth very far. Wide enough

to fit a straw into his mouth to drink and then the sucking motion would

cause the jaw to ache. He didn't need any help with not gaining any weight.

I think they need to do some test on JRA/RA and dentistry to see if RA does

cause problems with the teeth. It would make sense that it would.

Hi a........Esther has a touch of osteroporosis.........has been on a

lot

of different medications since age 8, and yet, she has only had one

cavity in all those years. She does need braces though.

You would think that with all her joint deteriorations her teeth would have

also.......... Mystery

My doctor told me it did. He told me to take extra care of my teeth. This

came about 13 years AFTER getting RA. My first RD didn't tell me this. My new

one did. Almost immediately upon seeing him as my new doctor. Since he had no

idea what my first one had told me. Not to mention I was on MTX about 14 or

so years and he, the first RD, never put me on folic acid! No wonder my mouth

hurt so bad for years upon years and I couldn't eat! BUT the first RD did

tell me to stay out of the sun while on MTX.

Thank you! You did help a lot. I had forgotten about the community college

and the dentistry they do. I will check into that. HOPEFULLY, next week. But

probably not until the 28th. I have a friend in town from North Carolina (I'm

in Vancouver, Washington), she's home on a 10 day leave from the Army. I am

sooo proud of her! She's off in Idaho this weekend to visit her Mom. She may

be getting shipped off to Korea. Guess who might get a really cool walking

stick!? If she finds one.

As for my teeth, I went and looked at them really good in the mirror, and it

looks like they are getting weak from the inside out. Rather than the other

way around. All this talk of teeth has planted the tree in my roots to go

find a dentist. My teeth don't look bad right now, so I need to get in there

and save them before it is too late.

It's time. Anyone else need to make an appointment? =)

The worse thing about going to the dentist? Trying to keep your mouth open

long enough with that severe shooting jaw pain! OUCHIE MAMA!

Jenna,

jesse takes folic acid everyday to help with the Methtrexate and he has taken

it for over 6 yrs. he gets really bad mouth sores from the MTX and the folic

acid helps reduce that from happening. You should find out about getting on

it too.

I'ver never heard of the folic acid thing either. My doc never said a

word about it. Did say something about calcium. Maybe I need to do the

folic acid thing too!

Rainy Sue,

I know just what you mean aboutkeeping the mouth open. I go to a

childrens dentist just for that reason. He is extra compassionate and

won't use a rubber damn when working on my mouth. Itmakes it so much

more pleasant when I can close my jaw every few minutes. I know it takes

the dentist longer to get the job done that way, but his empathy is

outstanding.

Don't worry , what he has learned about clinton has kind of turned him

off a bit. The reason jesse likes to read about the presidents is that he is

distanely related to Calvin Coolidge. some thing like 5th cousins. We are

from New England. thinks its so cool to be related to a former

president.

Good Idea!

I was very lucky with my last dentist. He was so understanding. He retired a

couple years ago, if that tells you when I saw a dentist last. Anyway, when I

had an appointment to do fillings, he would schedule me in for twice the time

it would take so I could rest my jaw.

What molds were you exposed to,and how long was your exposure? I have heard people say their teeth have fallen out after expsoure the mold, however, I believe it has to be extremely high CFU's and most have been exposed to stachy!

Hope your teeth problem is not related to the mold.

The victims I have spoken to, say there face begins to hurt and swell and then their teeth starting coming loose later.

Pat,

How much mold were you exposed to, and which mold causes teeth decay or is it the mass of all the molds mixed? How long after being exposed did you start having problems with your teeth? Did you notice by chance that your teeth gave you a problem after you started antifungals if you are on them?

My doc just informed me today I have to start antifugals due to the various molds that I was exposed to at the Greensboro Police Department, do you have any advice on taking or not taking the antifugals.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Christa,

I started Nystatin, an anti fungal and it almost killed me. It brings out your mold symptoms as during the "die off" the mold in your body fights like hell. I wish I could take them. So I am taking some natural detox stuff as my body just cant handle them.

Giid luck and God Bless and BE carefull.

Janet,

Is this a pil form or IV? My doc was talking about giving me Sporanox, which she said would me administered at the hospital with an IV. She said it is a good possibility it would make me very sick! I start allerg shots to build an immunity for the molds that I was exposed to on April 24, if my body does ok with the shots, then the docs want to start antifugals. How much does the antifugals cost, and does your insurance pay for them?

Thanks a lot,

Christa
