That is one of the reasons one is done, as well as to check out the bile duct. If there is a blockage somewhere in the system, then stagnant bile can form stones in the liver. They want to make sure while they are in there that they have gotten all the stones out. At least, the ones who want to make sure that a person doesn't leave with the same pain that brought them to surgery do this.
