Re: Heart Murmur

I was told I have a heart murmur too. I get an echo done every year. Its a very

slight murmur. It has to do with a valve that doesn't close completely. I have

never had any problems with it and they said that the only thing I would have to

worry about is when I have any type of surgery that I have to take antibiotics

first because I would be more susceptible to infections.

here been told they have a heart murmur? Today my rheumy

said that I have one. He looked back in my record to see if he'd heard

it before, but he had not.

I told him one other doctor had told me that I had one. Then when I

told my endocrinologist that, he listened to my heart again and said,

" Well, he must have better ears that I do. "

I wonder if this is something that would come and go.

My rheumy said that if he hears it again, he might have an MRI (or

something) done.

Oops, I've had several surgeries in my lifetime, but no antibiotics

first. But then I don't know how long I've had the heart murmur. It was

5-6 years ago that another doctor heard a heart murmur, so I guess it

doesn't do me any harm. I hope it doesn't, anyway.

Yes, Sue, a few years ago I was told that I have a murmur, but, as in your

case, not all other physicians could hear it.

Subsequently, I had an echocardiogram, and an abnormality supposedly

unrelated to the murmur was found.

I'm not sure I'm happy that Dr. Good Ears heard the murmur in the first

place.

Did your rheumatologist describe the murmur? What type or grade is it?

Until I came home and googled it, I didn't know that heart murmurs had

types or grades. He looked back in my records to see if he had heard it

before, and had not. Next time I see him, if he hears it again, it

sounded as though he would do something to investigate it. I go to my

endo next month and will again ask him if he can hear it. The last time

I asked him he could not.

I don't know if it's related to RA or not. I know my husband has a

heart murmur because he had scarlet fever as a baby. Rheumatic fever

will also cause it. I have had neither of these diseases.

I think that my murmur must come and go, since only two doctors have

heard it. I'm sure my rheumy will investigate it if he keeps hearing it.
