Jim,

Have you checked Dr Flechas website www.helpmythyroid.com, for Dr Brownstein/ ?

Dr F talked at the cancer Convention

This may not apply to you, or you may have heard of them already, but they say

that often the best way to help the thyroid is iodine in the form of potassium

iodide ( the old Lugol's solution)..plus they add a combo of B1 and B2 ( I

believe) that facilitates the iodine being absorbed.. A company called Optimox

sells both...That the blood tests used now re iodine are often not the right

way to measure it..that the body needs a lot more iodine , if its going to

actually get it into the organs ( organificatiion)is a urine test to measure

how much iodine you are ABSORBING ( not just taking it )..

And that often that is the answer to balance the thyroid, they have done lots

of clinical research on this and claim many successes with patients..re fibro

disease and cancer..they say that any disease with the word " fibro " , eg

fibromyalgia , points to an iodine deficiency, and cancer is an eventual

extension of that fibro disease

A couple of months ago I raised an issue about thyroid supplements and copper.

Unfortunately that thread generated some unnessesary friction (mostly my fault).

But I'd like to look at the issue again in a logical manner.

In doing a search of thyroid supplements, they seem to fall into three

categtories:

1. Complex mixtures

2. Iodine only, perhaps kelp

3. Homeopathic

Category 1 supplements all seem to contain copper, usually 1 mg per

pill. They also all seem to contain iodine of some type, selenium,

tyrosine, zinc, B6, and B12. They also seem to contain various herbs, that

vary from formula to formula.

I find it interesting that the category 1 supplements all seem to

contain the same stuff. Somebody, somewhere must have identified these things

as being necessary for thyroid health.

As discussed before, copper is the problem. There are many articles

saying that copper is really bad for cancer patients, because it

promotes angiogenesis.

Looking at the above list of ingredients, it looks like it would be

relatively easy to take all the supplements separately without the

copper -- zinc, selenium, iodine, tyrosine, and the B vitamins. The

herbs may be a bit of a problem, but I'm not sure which herbs would be

important. (Are any?)

I was advised to take 9 thyroid pills a day, which contained a total of 9 mg

of copper -- way way too much. However, one member here told me that I could

ameliorate the danger by taking IP6, which would chelate the loose copper. This

brings up a whole different topic - can IP6 chelate loose copper? That would be

cool if it could.

What kind of thyroid pills are you taking that contain so much copper?

I take armour thyroid and also iodine. I was concerned about the

armour, if it is not good for cancer patients. But I spoke to Dr.

Gordon, " the father of chelation, " at the cancer convention in

LA, and he said it is no problem for me to take armour thyroid. He

did say I need to chelate heavy metals and other toxins, and

recommended a bunch of things which his company sells, which I have

not yet purchased. But he has done a great deal of research, and I

can tell you that at 73 years old the guy looks fantastic, and is full

of energy.

Would a natural hormone product such as Armour contain metals?

They all seem to contain about the same amount of copper -- 1 mg. It

was the 9 pills a day that caused the overload. The brand

recommended 2 a day, but the naturopath recommended 9. I don't want

to get into that whole discussion again, but for a cancer patient,

perhaps even 2 or 3 mg may be too much.

I am on synthroid. I have been cancer free for ten years. I am on a

very hi dose because my doctor took out my thyroid gland and 25 nodes.

I was lucky to have only 2 of them have cancer. I was a lucky woman

because he saved three of my parathyrods and my levels were fine. I was

nuts for a bit but I was fine after a bit.

I have no idea what Armour actually contains, except that it is from

the thyroid gland of pigs. That seems to mean that whatever a pig is

made of or exposed to could be in the Armour. I assume they are not

raised in an organic way, etc. So I do hope one day I can give up the

Armour. If anyone else knows more about this subject, and whether

Armour is detrimental to cancer patients, please let us know.

Armour is the best hormone replacement product for most of those with

hypothyroidism. There is no reason that it would be bad for cancer

patients - if that person is hypothyroid. If they aren't, they

shouldn't be using Armour in the first place.

Armour contains all the thyroid hormones - T1, T2, T3, T4.

Herbs, etc, will not cure thyroid disease. I have yet to meet someone

who was hypo who cured themselves of hypothyroidism. Unfortunately. :(
