Guest guest
Hi : I posted a quote from the book " Garlic, Nature's Original Remedy " that cited studies in Japan and Bulgaria which indicate that garlic removes heavy metals from the body. The Japanese study indicates that a ratio of 1 part mercury for 10 parts garlic are removed from the body. It also indicated that garlic assists the liver in removing toxins. If you would like the full post I can send it to you. As to whether or not it should be raw or cooked is still rather unclear. The University of North Carolina has done studies that show if you cut garlic open, and then let it sit for 10 minutes before cooking it, it provides similar protection to raw garlic. UNC has fed garlic (raw, I believe) to mice that have an animal form of malaria, and the garlic has killed the parasites in the bloodstream of the mice. University of Toronto has done lab tests with garlic and has found that in the lab, garlic kills the malaria parasite as well as certain cancer cells. (A short blurb can be found at: http://www.sciam.com/news/111401/1.html) From: http://whyfiles.org/070spice/2.html " For 5,000 years, he says, the Chinese have treated worms and other intestinal parasites with garlic extract. " Further on down on the same page it reports: " " .............For example, researchers found that allicin-gobbling mice had a 50 percent reduction in plaque in the body's largest artery. Plaque -- AKA atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries -- is a major cause of heart disease. Mirelman and others have found that allicin can inhibit or kill many common human pathogens: Fungi (including Candida and Aspergillis) Bacteria (including the diarrhea-causing Shigella and Escherichia coli; Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the cause of tuberculosis; and antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus) Protozoa (including Giardia and Leishmania) Parasites (such as Entamoeba, a genus of parasites that includes the cause of amebic dysentery, an intestinal disease that affects millions around the world)............. " " In the book that cited earlier ( " Left for Dead " 1992 by Dick Quinn - who himself is now dead), Quinn devotes several pages to the multitude of benefits of garlic. (I highly recommend that book to anyone who is interested in alternative medicine. It is a wealth of information and first-hand reports on the benefits of cayenne pepper.) Raw, cooked, or supplements? There are still many questions about that. Raw is of course the best. Cooked? Like I mentioned earlier, UNC says that it does the same job if left to sit for 10 minutes after cutting it open. Some studies say that cold processed garlic supplements work too. I stick to raw.
