It then uses the cell's energy production mechanisms for replication. It has no capacity for respiration, anaerobically or aerobically. It is basically a piece of information and is not alive. Oxygen is not particularly toxic to virus. In fact, hyperbaric oxygen is used to stimulate the production of polio virus and coxsackie virus. A lot of the information floating around the internet concerning virus, cancer cells and oxygen is incorrect.
