Hey there ,

Thanks for the great welcome you gave me some while back. Unfortunately,

shortly thereafter I came down with quite the back injury and have been pretty

much out of pocket (or just out of it at times) while rehabbing my dang back!

You are right, there is quite a bit of evidence of the effect of cardiac

glycosides against cancer and oleander extract does contain cardiac glycosides,

primarily oleandrin. However, cardiac glycosides are only a small piece of the

synergistic puzzle that researchers are still trying to sort out when it comes

to the anti-cancer and immune boosting actions of oleander, something that was

dramatically demonstrated when an ethanolic extract of oleander was used against

cancer with much less results than the aqueous extract (what happened was that

the polar compounds, such as essential long chain polysacharrides, precipitated

out during the ethanol extraction process).

When you get a chance, I suggest that you take a look at the oleander series of

articles at:

http://www.tbyil.com

Which includes articles on oleander, a list of some of the compounds found in

oleander (such as quercetin, ursolic acid, and linoleic acid, to name just three

of many), articles about Sutherlandia OPC, which appears to be an even more

potent combo, and references to various studies on oleander.

Their is certainly a toxicity issue when it comes to the raw oleander plant.

However, the toxins are essentially eliminated by the extraction process of

lengthy boiling and straining and the cardiac glycoside content in a dose of

oleander is only about 1/40th that of a typical dose of digoxin/digitalis.

If you decide to make your own, their are links to two articles about that also

on the above page. Just be careful that you are sure that any plant you choose

has not been sprayed with pesticides. One sure way to tell if the most common

pesticide, malathion, has been used is if you touch it to your lips and feel a

tingling sensation.

Hopefully, as my back continues to improve I will be able to be a bit more

frequent contributor. I am soooo far behind

And Jim, I hate to hear you are having problems. Never say never my friend! If

you are having problem with your weight or wasting (cachexia), some suggestions

are:

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), can help prevent cachexia and is considered an

essential complimentary supplement to oleander in general by Marc Swanepoel (the

naturopathic PhD who devised Sutherlandia OPC). Other items that may may help

combat cachexia are coconut oil and especially Garden of Life's Primal Defense,

a natural blend of 12 species of probiotics and Homeostatic Soil Organisms

(HSOs). It helps support normal gastrointestinal balance of good and

potentially harmful bacteria, and maximizes the benefits of a healthy diet by

supporting normal absorption and assimilation of nutrients in the gut.

All the best,

Tony
