Guest guest
Hi. Please understand that I myself am not a researcher or a medical practitioner of any kind, and that this is conjecture, but very serious conjecture, I believe, because of the source: I am in touch regularly with a distinguished scientist in his 70's, whose name is Dr. Herbert Weissbach, and Dr. Weissbach has been studying antioxidants for decades. His opinion is, after all the studying he has done, that external antioxidants, those taken in pill and capsule form by mouth, that is, are almost immediately destroyed by the body before they can do any good, and that they stand little to no chance of entering the cell mitochondria. Personally, I think Dr. Weissbach's opinion merits serious consideration. I myself have taken up to 20 mg of melatonin, with never a single side-effect---hangover or whatever. That would, in my case, appear to bear out what Dr. Weissbach says. I think the best thing I can do to get as much antioxidant activity going in my body as possible is to eat lots of raw vegetables and fruits, as well as algae such as chlorella, spirulina and blue-green. I do take selenium, grape seed extract and some other supplements, but I am not as sure as I once was as to how much good they actually do. Best wishes, Elliot

Guest guest
I think melatonin's 1 of the most important supplements to take. " good sources Nature's Way, Source Natural, Nutricology and NatureMade " www.annieappleseedproject.org/repfromcanco.html. My notes on melatonin: take 15-50mg; less than 15mg may be ineffective; take only at night (never early in the day), ideally at bedtime. Side effects usually go away within a few days. Effective w/advanced melanoma, estrogen-positive metastatic breast cancer, metastatic colorectal, & lung (including metastasized SCLC & cisplatin-resistant metastatic NSCLC) cancer, met. renal cell carcinoma, GBM, and single brain metastasis. Reduces multidrug resistance (MDR) (www.denvernaturopathic.com/news/multidrugresistance.html). Enhances effects of tamoxifen (especially for metastasized breast cancer); helpful to take during radiation; synergistic w/radiation for GBM. Synergistic w/interferon for renal cancer. I heard that it enhances effectiveness and reduces toxicity of IL-2 but also can be dangerously synergistic w/IL-2. " Could be used with Adriamycin and cisplatin " www.annieappleseedproject.org/repfromcanco.html. Use good brand. promotes differentiation; prevents metastasis; " antiproliferative[, enhances] immunity, modulation of oncogene expression, and anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-angiogenic....anticachectic, anti-asthenic and thrombopoietic....[20 mg/day enhanced] efficacy...of chemotherapy in...metastatic...chemotherapy-resistant tumor....[reduced] chemotherapy-induced asthenia, thrombocytopenia, stomatitis, [lymphocytopeni,] cardiotoxicity and neurotoxicity " www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve & db=PubMed & list_uids=11862501\ & dopt=Abstract " melatonin…inhibited [MCF-7 breast cancer] cells by 78 percent…blocked cell division in cancer cells. Guest guest
Are there side effects to melatonin? Where is the research? I take 3mg now and am groggy when I get up at night. I have been taking 3mg for about a month (dx lobular breast cancer). --CC > > I think melatonin's 1 of the most important supplements to take. > >snip> My notes on melatonin: > take 15-50mg;
Guest guest
I have found no side effects in my research of melatonin . As you know as we grow older or in the case of cancer we produce insufficient melatonin .the idea is to make up the difference with supplements .If 3mg is causing you to be drowsy when you get up then maybe you will need to cut back. Guest guest
I've read that some cancer patients benefit from as much as 40 mgs of melatonin. As mentioned, if groggy the next day, cut back dosage. Bill
