> Valerian is addictive and when used improperly can induce all sorts of side

effect including

cardiac palpations. Just because valerian isn't illegal, does not take it out

of the realm of a

mood altering, hypnotic, central nervous system affecting drug.

First of all note the valerian I use is loose raw bulk valerian root, which has

not been

tampered with in any way by any manufacturor or chemical company. If you took

chemicals in

capsules or supplements no wonder they bothered you as those are drugs, not

foods.

Also you keep getting your advice from the chemical industries, the same ones

who are medicating

and making everyone sick. Of course they will say any product they don't own

and sell is not

safe

I took valerian in copious amounts for a few days, took it in small amounts at

other times, and

at no time was it addictive to me. It helped me to sleep when I had a

toothache, but not for a

few hours when the pain subsided. I have drunk 1/2 gallon of water thick with

valerian before

running intensely in the hills for an hour or two and it did NOT cause heart

palpitations. To

the contrary I think because of it's relaxing properties that it probably

relieves them.

At NO time have I EVER been in a stupor (except when reading your messages

hehehe) after

drinking valerian. I have never felt any special need or desire to drink it but

only did it

rather mechanically because I felt it would help me.

I have had heart palpitations on at least half a dozen occasions within two days

of a dentist

working on my teeth. This was several years ago. Heart palpitations can also

be caused " very "

easily by breathing " too much " . See the Bultayko method of breathing that gets

rid of asthma.

> , valerian ain't food.

Valerian is a food because it is from a plant and is alive and full of enzymes.

I have said

this before.

> When you use it, you are medicating yourself. If you think that you aren't

self-medicating,

then you are lying to yourself.

Again you confuse food and medication. Medication is drugs and chemicals. When

I eat salads,

drink valerian, or have freshly made vegetable juices I am EATING. When you

have your

supplements and capsulized " products " you are medicating.

> Anyone taking aspirin (a synthesized element originating in the bark of birch

trees) without

the direction of a health care advisor, is self medicating.

Exactly. Because aspirin is not bark from birch trees. It is a derivative of

bark from birch

trees made by chemical companies. When you take the advice of a health care

advisor then s/he

is medicating you but the effects are the same.

Valerian helped me because it worked systemically and that's how the pain went

away. Not " just "

from removing the pain. It got rid of whatever was " causing " the pain, whether

that was

infection, over stimulation of a nerve, or whatever. The pain did not come

back, even long

after I stopped drinking the valerian. So it was not a matter of altering my

mood. I have

taken it at any time day or night and been totally alert at any time. I slept

at night becase I

was relaxed and my mind was clear and free from worry. But I would be doing any

activity in the

day and be fine too, free and clear.

It doesn't taste all that good. It is fine. Not bad but not good. I can drink

it down fine

but certainly never have a desire or " need " or want to drink it. I can drink it

for a day and

not have it for 6 months and that's fine. There is never any kind of craving to

have it, like

people would have with coffee for example. I have have never had coffee but

have seen and read

about the many effects in people who do and how hard it is to give it up.

You should add coffee to your list of mood altering drugs.

Valerian is much much safer than coffee.

I like valerian. And like I said before it's good stuff.

, that is pure, unadulterated bull shit and you know it. You like to

rant at people and groups instead of responding to fact. The herbal book

that I quoted from is published by the Herbal Society of America. The web

sites I referred to had no ties to manufacturers of anything. Those that are

medicating and making everyone sick are the same ones who have reduced the

rate of heart disease by 24% from 1989 to 1999 and who reduce the rate of

cancer deaths from 2 to 3 per cent per year. You can hate the AMA and the

pharmaceuticals all that you want, but don't lie about their real intentions

or the results that they have produced. Your experiences are not other

peoples experiences.

I have no problem with your use of valerian, or anyone else's use of

valerian. What I would like all users of it to know is that there are

adverse side effect.
