This news have been given over 20 min on main evening TV news in Norway and

Sweden.

Will it get as large publicity in other countries ?

Can you give me any feedback from USA? UK? DE? FRA?

That should sure divert attention from the cancer-causing trans-fats found in

most commercially produced baked goods and french fries. I especially find the

move to bypass the peer review process really cool! Gallo would be proud.

Hi Agnes:

It was reported this evening on both the local and national (NBC) evening TV

news. It got pretty good coverage - except (oh yes, this is the good old

USA) they also interviewed a lobbyist for the fast food industry and he said

" ...the study is suspect. " Of course it is. It hits him in the wallet!

I think that was a spoof more so than a hoax. But the timing is

interesting, isn't it??

therwise we are constantly bombarded with various cancinogens from all

sorts of avenues, including our foods. All this article really pointed to,

as best I can see it, is to do just what we here have already been doing in

avoiding the foods that are hydrogenated or high in saturated animal fats

and low in fiber content.

Dale, I totally agree. I just now saw it on TV, and I didn't hear what kind

of bread. French Fries are definitely a no-no for me anyway with GB

problems, so I don't even worry about it. Anyone with GB problems shouldn't

be having them or anything fried.

They also said that this news was released without any research.

One of the things about a study like this is that they never pointed out

whether there was a specific type of flour used in the making of the breads.

Refined and enrichened wheatflours have been suspect for some time as a

reason for various ills that people will aquire.

http://www.healthlibrary.com/reading/ncure/chap98.htm

http://www.cspinet.org/nah/wwheat.html

http://www.cspinet.org/nah/bread.htm

http://www.innercleanse.com/healthinfoandnotes/digestiveproblems.html

Then too there is other reports of the good that whole grain breads can do.

http://www.msnbc.com/modules/mealsheal/default.asp

So, it really boils down to getting more facts regarding a statement that is

so broad regarding breads. However, regarding deep fried foods that pretty

much is a no brainer since it has been known to be a prime reason for a lot

of the health problems of which people suffer. Many who do become ill often

have had diets which were high in simple carbohydrates, low in fiber, and

had also been eating foods loaded with satruated animal fats and

hydrogenated fats, which of course takes in French fries.

Now as regards the report it also is noteing the quanity of the foodstuffs

being eaten are pretty high as with potato chips and french fries. Now we

know here that this is already a no-no simply for the fact that these

products contain hydrogenated oils and should be avoided by anyone

attempting to do a cleansing of the body or simply attempting to maintain a

healthy lifestyle.

Otherwise we are constantly bombarded with various cancinogens from all

sorts of avenues, including our foods. All this article really pointed to,

as best I can see it, is to do just what we here have already been doing in

avoiding the foods that are hydrogenated or high in saturated animal fats

and low in fiber content. I've already been saying on this list to look at

all fast food places signs as virtual skull and crossbones i.e. poison, so

this article just confirms one more thing to which we've all noted before

regarding good health, avoid fast food places that do nothing more than deep

fry the food to cook it.

Cancer Risk Found in French Fries, Bread

Reuters April 24, 2002 10:24 AM ET

http://www.reuters.com/news_article.jhtml?type=search & StoryID=873399

By Starck

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Basic foods eaten by millions around the world such

as bread, biscuits, potato chips and french fries contain alarmingly high

quantities of acrylamide, a substance believed to cause cancer, Swedish

scientists said on Wednesday.

The research carried out at Stockholm University in cooperation with

experts at Sweden's National Food Administration, a government food safety

agency, showed that heating of carbohydrate-rich foods, such as potatoes,

rice or cereals formed acrylamide, a much studied substance classified as a

probable human carcinogen.

The research was deemed so important that the scientists decided on the

unusual step of going public with their findings before the research had

been officially published in an academic journal.

" I have been in this field for 30 years and I have never seen anything like

this before, " said Leif Busk, head of the food administration's research

department.

Findings unveiled at a news conference called by the food administration

showed that an ordinary bag of potato chips may contain up to 500 times

more of the substance than the top level allowed in drinking water by the

World Health Organization.

French fries sold at Swedish franchises of U.S. fast-food chains Burger

King Corp and Mc's contained about 100 times the one microgram per

liter maximum permitted by the WHO for drinking water, the study showed.

One milligram, or 0.001 grams, contains 1,000 micrograms.

KNOWN HAZARD

The Environmental Protection Agency classifies acrylamide, a colorless,

crystalline solid, as a medium hazard probable human carcinogen.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, acrylamide

induces gene mutations and has been found in animal tests to cause benign

and malignant stomach tumors.

It is also known to cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous

system.

" The discovery that acrylamide is formed during the preparation of food,

and at high levels, is new knowledge. It may now be possible to explain

some of the cases of cancer caused by food, " Busk said.

" Fried, oven-baked and deep-fried potato and cereal products may contain

high levels of acrylamide, " the administration said.

" Acrylamide is formed during the preparation of food and occurs in many

foodstuffs...Many of the analyzed foodstuffs are consumed in large

quantities, e.g. potato crisps, french fries, fried potatoes, biscuits and

bread. "

Acrylamide news were taken seriosly also in Finland and many

instances have started to investigate it. Many people have stopped

eating french fries in hamburger places also hard, dried bread, rice

and majs products like corn flakes contain acrylamide which is

dangerous nerve poison! So better stay in fresh food!
