The question has been raised about the safety of Vitamin D in large

doses.

In investigating this question, I also found a site:

http://www.emedicine.com/emerg/topic638.htm

which had the following to say about Vitamin D:

>· Acute toxicity effects may include muscle weakness, apathy,

>headache, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and bone pain.

>· Chronic toxicity effects include the above symptoms and

>constipation, anorexia, polydipsia, polyuria, backache, hyperlipidemia,

>and hypercalcemia.

>· Findings also may include hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias.

To try to answer the question about the safety of Vitamin D in large

doses, I checked out

http://ipmwww.ncsu.edu/safety/Southern_region/pesttox.pdf , which states

that:

> " Vitamin D can be lethal if taken at doses of 0 mg/kg. "

Please calculate what the lethal doss in IU would be for your weight, and

conclude the extent to which your dosage is safe.

Another site http://www.thebody.com/pinf/vitamins/vitamins3.html states

that:

>Vitamin D is also a very toxic vitamin. Adverse reactions have been

>reported after single overdoses as low as 50 times the RDA. Overzealous

>fortification of infant formula with vitamin D in Britain in the 1950s

>resulted in Vitamin D toxicities in many children. Vitamin D toxicity

>causes bone lesions.

My calculation is therefore 50 x 400 IU = 20,000 IU in a single dose is

therefore lethal!
