Hi Helen,

I know this is difficult but try and relax. You're still in very early days of

recovery here. Everything you're going through is quite normal.

I would strongly advise not just taking your pain meds at night. Staying ahead

of the pain, taking pills on a regular schedule will help.

Take care,

Jeff

Joint Replacement

Subject: New to this group

I had a Total Knee Replacement Dec 15th, and I must admit its been a tough and

painfull road so far.  I spent 5 days in the hospital and then transfered to a

private rehab hospital for a further 18 days of intensive hydro and phyio.  On

discharge I was on the CPm at 108 degrees and 95% flexion and 5% extention.

After waiting 3 days before being able to start out patients hydo and physio I

went backwards to 90% flexsion and 10% extension, which was rather

disappointing.  I am still on heavy pain meds when needed, but changed from

diagesic to panadol during the day as didnt like too much of the dizzy feeling.

On oxycontin 20 mgs twice a day and endone as needed, but trying to use them

only at night which seems to be the worst time foe me, its like the witching

hour.  This is when I get down, teary and think what have I done having such

major surgery and I am only 46.  Just wanted to share my story and happy to hear

from anyone.  I am concerned that my knee clicks when bending during expercises,

and inside medial aspect is rather sore and tender expecially during excerise

with pain at times radiating down the tibia, is this normal.  Still swollen and

hot to touch after 4 weeks is this normal too. regards, Helen

Hang on tight Hellen, It's going to be a bumppy ride. But from

everything I've been reading here, it's going to get so much better

shortly down the road.

I had TKR on Dec.1. All the symptoms you discribe, especially the pain

being worse at night, and radiating down your shin, are absolutely

things that I've had too.

I'm almost 7 weeks out now, and just over the last week I've noticed a

huge improvement where pain is concerned - especially at night.

Important thing to remember is that there is no magical date when

everything is better. You're on no one's time clock but your own. The

hardest thing for me to deal with is learning to be patient with my

healing, and not comparing my progress to any one else. We are not

cakes baking in the oven. There is no timmer to tell us when we are

done. We're more like fine wine or wiskey that takes it's own time to

be ready.

The one exercise I found most helpfull in getting my leg straight was

the one where I folded a pillow in half and put it under my heel.

Several people have mentioned to not be afraid to take your pain

meds...they're absolutely right. No one gets a gold medal for doing it

without pain meds. Take them often, before you start hurting. Stay on

top of the pain.

I posted earlier about a sock buddy that my children made me. It's a

sock filled 3/4 way with regular - not instant- white rice and tied off

at the top. You hear it in the microwave for a couple of minutes and

enjoy the moist heat. I've used it on my knee, theigh, shin and

shoulders. The shoulders part was because I was getting all tense from

the pain and bunching up by neck and shoulders. Sometimes heat just

isn't the thing for the healing knee, but it can still help out on your

theigh and shin. Also try putting a few dops of lavender oil on the

sock. Lovely!

We will be better. We will play in the park again. We WILL.

Hugs from Lori, a 43 year old mother of 4 in Texas

Hi Helen

My surgeon told me that walking will help to alleviate the shin pain, which

is usually caused by swelling. So do try to get out for a short walk daily

if you can, as this reduces the swelling. It did gradually work for me!

Good luck

Hi

Twelve months ago a spot on my left shoulder was diagnosed as Melanoma.

This was removed.

Then came tests. Melanoma was discovered in my lungs. I went through six

months of Chemo. Two of the three small spots, about the size of a BB

stayed about the same size this entire time. The one spot used for a biopsy

was reduced in size to match the other two.

Four months ago I was put on Ipilimumab, a clinical trial medicine which

turns on T-cells and they stay on all the time. Tests were performed last

Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Results available the next day showed two

spots in my brain. Each 1.5 cm in diameter. One of the three spots in my

lungs was gone.

I'm now scheduled for brain surgery this Tuesday February 22, 2011 to

remove those two spots.

All of my treatment has been done and continues to be done at MD

in Houston. I live twelve miles from their front door.

I've read much about alternative treatments but I have no idea which if

any actually work.

My question to whomever has some good information and willing to share it

with me............What are the two best, most used, most popular, etc

alternative treatments?

:

Go to dr-gonzlez.com, he has testimonials on his website. I do not know about

brain cancer, but he is worth a try.

My dr. in Mexico I know treats brain cancer and he told me of a prince from

saudi arabia who was treated by him and survived ten years, I think he was very

young about 9. His name is Dr. Alvarez from the Stella Maris Clinic in Tijuana.

He was able to get rid of my tumors from rectum and the drs wanted me to have

radical surgery.
