Guest guest
As promised, here is reference from L. Hoffman's book entitled, 7 weeks to a Settled Stomach re charcoal tablets and transit time: You can test your own transint time by using charcoal tablets, sold in most health-food stores and drugstores as a remedy for intestinal gas. Right after you have a bowel movement, take 20 grams of charcoal (about 5-10 tablets, depending on their size), and note the time you swallow them. When you have your next bowel movement, note again how long it takes before you see black stool. When charcoal appears as black stool in your otilet bowl, your home test is complete, and you have a rough notion of your average transit time. Less than 18 hours probably means you are not absorbing nutrients properly; more than 72 hours means that food may sit in your gut, leaving you at risk for serious intestinal illness. Dr. Hoffman also has a section on preventing gallstones. He explains these 4 tips in further detail: 1. Check for food allergies 2. Stick to vegetables (and stay waway from sugar and boosting your fiber intake). 3. Add fish oil and other nutrients (e.g., omega 3 fatty acids, lecithin, taurine 4. Drink to Your Health -- some alcohol intake appears to protect you against gallstones. Hope this helps someone. > > > Dr. Hoffman has a good book on digestion. Sorry I can't > remember title but I am sure you can look it up. Anyway, he > recommends using charcoal tablets to determine the average transit > time of digestion you may find it helpful to check out the IBS > discussions on this.
