Actually chickens are like women, they " lay " eggs whether there is a man around or not. Like human females however the egg, in order to produce another creature, must be fertilized by a male. But the unfertilized egg is fine, delicious, and nutritious. It is the way chickens are raised that is the problem, not the fact that there are no roosters around. You can produce wonderfully healthy and nutritious eggs with just hens, they just won't make baby chickens.....some people prefer it that way (many ova-lacto vegetarians don't want fertilized eggs) The key to healthy eggs is that the hens are living a natural life; they are on the ground foraging and pecking around for bugs and grass and weeds, seeds, etc. They are getting exercise and fresh air and sunshine. If you've never had such an egg, you will not believe the difference in taste and appearance - the bright yellow, nearly orange yolks that stand up so big and tall in the frying pan. The commercial egg industry is one, if not *the* most cruel of all animal " farming " in the way the chickens are forced to live.....in tiny cages in filthy environments necessitating continuous antibiotics being fed in their feed and/or water. <<<<Back here in the Philippines we have so much of that and not all know the harmful effects. One of them is that when you feed it to children their growth and maturity are so fast that so many ladies here in the Philippines get their 1st menstruation at the age of 7 and 8!!!>>> this is not just in the Philippines but in the States as well! It is also due to the large amounts of cow's milk consumed full of antibiotics and hormones. <<<The problem is that we keep on poisoning everything, the air the water, the food we eat yet we are wondering why we are sick with so many diseases. We must just have to go back to what is natural and organic. Cheers!>>> Amen, brother! Couldn't agree more. Warmly, Janice, psychologist, nutritionist, and organic farmer!
