about dye. if u r afraid of the chems, use a temp it

has vegetable dyes. to get a perm ccolor, stylist use

10-20 volume peroxide. to lighten we use 20-30-40 as

wellas bleach that is stronger than just color

lightening. so if there is a problem w/color, its the

peroxide. good luck, shelly

For hair dye, I used henna. It's an heb that's been used for thousands

of years, starting with the ancient Egyptians. It's naturally red, but

you can get it in many shades of brown and black as well.

My favorite brand is called " Rainbow henna "

Some of the henna packages say " will not cover grey' what I find on my

hair is that the white-gray hair is a lighter, brighter red than the

dark hairs, and it looks fine on me. But a trick you can do is to dye

your hair twice. First you dye it red, then dye it again whatever color

you like, be it black, brown, mahogany, etc. YOur hair will be a more

even color then.

The henna is a powder that looks like mud when you mix it. It has a

nice smell. I mix mine with hot water, and a tablesppon of olive oil

and apple cider vinegar. Or somethimes a whole egg. You leave it on

half an hour, then wash it off. It's a bit of a mess. You need to do

the first rinse into a big pot so that the henna mud doens't clog your

sink.

There's another kind of herbal hair dye, not henna, i haven't tried it,

don't remember what it called. I see it a health food stores.

I have tried different brands of Henna but it didn`t worked for me.

I even warmed head with electric blanket but no much help too.

Hair dyes from health store are really toxic with cancerogens.

If somebody can recommend brand that is more safe that usually?

I don`t want to be gray though it is fashionable now.

Liz,

I've researched this and it appears that Europe sells hair dyes that

exclude the most toxic ingredients. They aren't available in the U.S.

and so you would have to pay the ship rate. Google something about

non-toxic hair color in Europe - I don't have the sites on hand right now.

Hope this helps,

Anita

I don't know about hair, but walnut husks used to stain my hands dark

brown for days and days and days, and I couldn't wash it out.

the greys are very resistent. I've thought of just letting it go

naturally but it gives me a washed out look and it looks terrible .....

any suggestions? I tried searching on Bee's site but couldn't seem to

find anything.

==>Try searching our message archives; it was discussed not long ago.

I have not tried it but I read an article about a plant based hair dye.  It is

called Act by Nature; actbynature.com is the website.  They say they have the

first water soluble plant-based dyes.  Let us know if you try it.

Good luck,

Thanks Sarina

I'll have to look for that one. I found one by Herbatint so not sure how that

one is going to be. Will let you know after I use it.

Maddy,

I have used Herbatint with good success however, it is not that " natural " .  The

ingredients in AbN seem to be pretty good but who knows how it will work!

Hi,

Herbatint opens up the hair shaft, thus has toxic chemicals (most

importantly PPD and peroxide). It contains far less of the PPD than

your average store bought brand but it is still there. I have been

using it for years and understand that it isn't harmless. To reduce

the risks, you can choose the lighter shades (less PPD), leave it on

for as short a time as possible, do not massage into scalp and try to

stretch out the time between applications as long as possible. I'm not

recommending this to anyone - it's just the compromise I've made for

now as I'm just not ready to go gray and I don't want the darker hair

that henna or Act by Nature (won't lighten hair as it doesn't open the

hair shaft) offer.

My two cents,

Anita
